Tube-Nosed Fruit Bat

picture by Piotr Naskrecki, Conservation International

What a crazy looking creature this bat is! It looks kind of like an alien monkey. This species is one of around 200 found in Papa New Guinea. Much of the land is only accessible by helicopter, boat or foot which is why so many rare and new species are being observed.

Katydid

Piotr Naskrecki
Of the 120 katydids studied, 40 of them are new species. Love them pink eyes...

Feather Tailed Opossum

Piotr Naskrecki
This one was last seen in 1985 and supposedly feeds on nectar.

Katydid - emerald green

I bet this one looks cool when it is flying..

New Species Of Thorny Ant

Piotr Naskrecki
What a beast! That thing must have some strong neck muscles! Funny that one way to discover new insects/ants is to just lay out some crumbs around camp and they will come to you.

Katydid - Aims For The Eyes?

Piotr Naskrecki
This one is well camouflaged and apparently likes to jab it's prey into submission.

Frog

Piotr Naskrecki
I missed this one upon first glance. It has a cricket-like call and I can see how this one got looked over, so tiny and hidden.

Hope ya enjoyed these and my favorite is that bat! I am always glad to see new species discovered, a testament to the widely diverse array of creatures that share this planet with us. Some disappear while others make a debut....

Don't worry, it is just a slide show of pictures.

The vid is awesome and you should check it out. It has some creatures that I have never seen before, like the pygmy parrot and hairy caterpillar.
