Suzanne loves Perfume

You know it took me practically my whole life to appreciate this perfume until its discontinued and unscrupulous sellers on ebay are selling the occasional bottle for a mortgage on a house that l suddenly love it!
I have 30mls of a 90ml bottle remaining and I'm just having to use it sparingly and I'm not a 1 or 2 measly sprays type of woman but l know once this is gone its gone from my life forever so I'm holding on for dear life.
I wore this to work one day sprayed liberally of course as l didnt want to waste my more expensive special ones for work, and oh my gosh for the first time it struck me, what's that amazing clean powdery but soapy fresh and classy smell? I thought it was someone else wearing something great and after sniffing myself realised it was me!!
I'm not going to bore on about each note you can see what's in it on here above but this stuff is- just got out of a huge marble bubble bath, having used obscenely expensive French soap and powdered yourself in something wonderful and soft, and perfumed yourself with something gorgeous and expensive, and putting on a soft white cashmere jumper and all the fragrances are mingling into this amazing scent.
Oh my gosh why didn't l buy 5 bottles when l saw it on sale for £21 and bought this as a cheap and cheerful wear to preserve the time l have left with my expensive ones? I'm so upset l wasted it. 😞 😢 😭 Finding a bottle of this now is equivalent to finding the holy grail it's near enough impossible.
Funny story when l was a little girl of about 5years old l would sneak a little use of my mummy's expensive grown up lady perfumes. She had all the Diors and Chanels and Estee Lauders and l would put on her perfume & her pearls and bracelets & fox fur coat and high heels and Dior makeup, and pretend to be a fancy lady going out to dinner. One time she had an enormous bottle of Chloe and it wasn't a spray it was about 200mls and full and it had a big fancy clouded glass decorative sculpture stopper in it. Of course l dropped it and 80% spilled out all over the carpet. In panic mode because l knew l wasn't supposed to be messing with her things l filled the rest of the bottle of perfume up with water and it all went white and cloudy. I heard her coming upstairs and put it back on the dressing table and went and hid. 😆 Well needless to say l heard her screaming for me then, and that was one of the biggest hidings l ever got in my childhood! Its been referred to ever since as the Chloe beating! We laugh about it now, l deserved it. (Relax everyone it was 1980 a time when even the neighbours and friends of the family were allowed to beat you if they saw you misbehaving outside and your parents were grateful to them for doing it, and then they would beat you for giving someone else cause to do it!) 😆🤣 Anyway love this perfume even though its lure got me in a lot of trouble once. I give this a 7.5/10

I am literally heartbroken that they have stopped making Chloe. I have worn her for forty years since I was sweet sixteen. I still have a little left in a bottle, and I'm torn between using it up or keeping it as the scent disintegrates away from it's exotic headiness.
I am searching for a new love but I know from experience that there is no love like the love of one's youth.

Chrisandra

I just found a vintage EDT bottle from mid 90's, with very little left in it. The juice is dark in color, there is no writing on the bottle and on the bottom, it says that it was made in the USA.
I don't know what I have, is it the original version from the 70's which was still made in the 90's, or was there a reformulation in the 90's?
I remember (not very proudly) that at the time, I used to buy frags that had gifts with purchase (large duffle/weekend/tote bags, makeup bags, miniature perfumes or matching soap/body lotion/shower gel), and it was mostly scents that I didn't like.
Chloe was one of them so I gave it to my mom, she liked and used it.
I don't remember how it used to smell back in the day but I imagine that the juice turned.
It smells harsh, strong and vintage, more like my Magie Noir from '91 or Rumba by Ted Lapidus (I don't have the original Balenciaga). No fruit, coconut or anything juicy in this scent.

Perfect10Tara

Absolute vintage classic that I wore and adored! It was a strong, heady, honeyed soap. So mature smelling. Made me feel very grown up.

This is second bottle of perfume I ever owned. I looved it! I still have a little left.. and honestly I wish I could buy it fresh again. I don't love the scent as much now that my bottle has aged. I feel like it has evolved into a thick jammy sweetness, and gives me a bit of a headache to wear it. I don't know which batch year, but I was gifted mine sometime between 2010-2012.

Alces Alces

Chloe, classic Chloe, used to be a soapy tuberose chypre, floral and green. My aunt wore this in the mid 1970's. After she visited I would go smell the sofa cushions where she sat because Chloe wafted from them. The new version is cheaper but still recognizable.

Even cheapened, Chloe is better than most new perfumes out there. I don't dislike modern perfumes. I just prefer structure and complexity typical of older fragrances. Once upon a time women wore beautiful, interesting, layered scents to present themselves as polished, chic, and stylish. Older perfumes just do more. Sometimes I like that.

And it's great to return to scents that are NOT influenced by La Vie Est Belle, Coco Mademoiselle, Baccarat Rouge 540, Angel, or Poison. Like listening to seventies music before auto tune and drum machines. Sometimes I like that.

mystica

Back in time perfumes used to smell like perfume.

Chloe is a fantastic green, fresh, sweet, soapy tuberose bomb. A little goes a long way... I am smelling my wrists like an addict.

I absolutely adore this fragrance my used use it and had the soap body spray perfume everything in the range so upset that they discontinued it because I used to use it too

Enrium

I have wanted to try Chloé for a long time, it being an oft-recommended vintage gem. I have a vintage miniature of Chloé, complete with lily-shaped lid, and the bright amber liquid is just as good as I'd hoped. It is quite similar to Balenciaga Michelle, an underrated 1970s floral that I reviewed recently, but Chloé is headier and less fresh up top, and more soapy overall.

Chloé opens with sweet, juicy peach, followed by sweet, heady florals. I get a lot of orange blossom, and sweet ylang ylang follows, lush and tropical. Coconut enhances the tropical creaminess. The aldehydes here are more soapy than bright, so much so that Chloé doesn't feel like an aldehydic floral scent in the manner of No. 5/Arpège etc., it feels more like a floriental with chypre facets.

As in Michelle, Poison-like tuberose features prominently as the floral heart emerges, lasting until the drydown. Powdery rose joins it, rounded out by clean jasmine, and some iris follows. Clove-like carnation adds spice.

Narcissus leads the drydown, polleny and grassy, and a lovely chypre-like mossiness emerges. Soft woody notes round it out, but it is mostly rich, sweet amber that makes up the base. It becomes musky as it fades, sweetly balsamic until final fade. Sillage is strong and longevity is long-lasting.

A huge yet cleverly balanced amber floral, this is complex yet cohesive. Evocative of its era, but still wearable today, it is extroverted femininity in a bottle. To be worn with confidence. 4/5.

ALST10

I blind-bought this one because it was mentioned multiple times in a novel. I got the last two bottles before a perfume shop discontinued this version of Chloe but they no longer had a tester. I still bought both, and holy cow what a bust! Instant headache and nausea, like a thunderclap. This one was literally the worst perfume I had ever smelled. Put both bottles on ebay that same day.

Cadera97

I was lucky enough to get this little gem at TJMAXX in 2016 and wore it during Ohio's harsh winter. Unfortunately, I felt I wasn't going to need it anymore and sent to my family abroad. Now I had to buy a dupe, since it reminds me of my fiancee, who is also abroad. Great memories. Think twice about letting go of your fragrances, unless they are like this modern perfumes that are all a mix of over ripe fruit salad, orange blossom and vanilla. For God's sake, what a bore are most fragrances these days.

drugstore classics

A take-no-prisoners SOAPY floral with inexplicable gorgeousness. A scratchy, sharp opening gives way to woody-floral wonder. I love the honeysuckle, the sandalwood, the utterly indefinable warmth and complexity. If soapy florals smell bad on you, avoid at all costs. Be sure to give her plenty of time and tests before giving up - she's that worth it! But know that Chloe is a masterpiece, either way.

Note: Hawaii Milton Lloyd is indeed an excellent dupe. There are nuances that are different, but when someone is wearing Hawaii, I cannot tell the difference. <3

This has been in my collection for as long as I can remember. This, and Elizabeth Taylor's Passion! I promise, it never leaves--it's an endless supply. I have several bottles, with huge dents in them--but, I never finish them, lol. I haven't worn this fragrance in years, but I have checked it recently to make sure the juice is still fresh--and, of course it is! Chloe is bold, yet classy; fragrant, yet feminine. It is an unforgettable experience in a bottle! I was a little kid, going to school-- smelling of Chloe because my Mother, also, had an endless supply! As a matter of fact, I inherited hers and added it with mine, lol. I have to wear this soon. It'll make me smile!

ladidamia

This is very strong perfume. Blind-bought it from saks off fifth avenue. I could say it’s one of those classic perfumes that your grandmother wears that lasts forever. Actually my aunt wore similar perfume. Couldn’t even think what’s in there, i just couldn’t stand the smell, sprayed couple times, sat on my perfume’s corner for couple years and decided to leave it on the hallway with mark ‘feel free to grab it’

Kitskivich

I will forever associate Chloé with my college and post-college years. If it wasn't discontinued I'd pick one of for sentimental reasons.

eh-MEE-lee-eh

I will forever regret de-cluttering this fragrance.

To me it smells like a honeyed peach with a massive dose of white florals. BIG projection and wonderful longevity.

I bought it for a very reasonable price at the drugstore back in college and wore it heavily. Ended up decluttering it in a moment of temporary insanity because a had another fragrance that filled the same niche in my collection. When I inevitably missed it and went to buy another bottle, I found it was discontinued!! Haven’t been able to justify the hefty price tag it now comes with just yet. Mainly because it was always fairly divisive to those around me, either they felt it was “so me” or too “old fashioned.”

If you have a bottle of this fragrance, please cherish it in honor of me.

louiee

Chloe.. a truly magnificent gem.
I just bought a bottle in original box and all.
It was far better than I remenbered.
Lovely aldehydes, juicy peach, lilacs with ambery oakmoss undertones.

Feminine, vibrant and in some way uplifting. They dont make perfumes like this anymore.

Longevity and silage are great and the scent on my skin is only getting better softer and more alive on my skin.
Classy and no grandma here,

medusa666

@FrenchTeacher

You're absolutely right.
The 'old lady smell' comes mainly from noses without an identity..Noses that have no sense of quality olfaction. Noses that didn't have the privilege to experience the magic of signature aromas that have a story of a decade to tell and continue to take us back to a time when there was a sense of meaning in life. Noses that are so narcissistic they can't imagine nor accept they'll ever get old.......
Nowadays, especially the poor millenniums, will grow older without having the privilege to learn what timeless perfume should be like-today, everything almost smells identical to each other, has that same heavy sweet smell that 'yells' for attention without deserving it.....
When all these young ladies become old ladies, the only thing they'll remember from this forsaken decade (and the decades to come..) is the loss of a free, meaningful life...

derliesl

Blind buy for €20,=. Definitely not my fragrance. It smells outdated, very floral, synthetic and soapy.
We've been using it as a room spray in our bathroom. It's really effective: one spritz fills the room and masks all the other unwanted scents.

myra83

I manage to get it from my friend it was last batch i guess since its already discontinued. Batch 2012, 9 years old already.. thanks to my friend suren for helping me to have this beautiful classic germs. 💕🤟

panitaz

I wanted to buy a bottle online, but I found out that it was discontinued. This perfume as well as other perfumes like Halston and Passion remind me of my chic grandmother a.k.a. abuelita fashion. I remembered that it was relatively affordable considering how potent and beautiful the fragrance was. I like Chloe, Halston, and Passion, and I like trendy perfumes too!

Mona708

I got my bottle from my grandmother; she received it as a gift a long time ago and used some of it, but ultimately she wasn’t too crazy about it. When she found out that I liked it, she gave it to me.

This perfume reminds me of a sweeter, less complicated version of Halston. There’s no marigold note or mint early on. It’s feminine without being too frou-frou. If you’re used to more delicate scents you’ll have to be careful not to overspray or you’ll run everybody out of the room 😂

CdeBXL

What can I say. My grand mother's fave, my aunt's fave. Sadly, both are gone now.
It was the perfume of the ladies in my life, when I was a child in the 70s and we travelled to Nice, Venice, or Monte Carlo. The sultry evenings after a day on the beach or by the pool. They were sipping cocktails and wore a silk kaftan after the sun has set.
I could write full novels on the associations, but suffice it to say that this vintage gem, along with Leonard's Tamango -to be reviewed soon, is the original olfactory track of my childhood. Simply divine!

kiraagold

Chloé is pure fun sunshine, from beach wear and flip-flops to glamorous midsummer weddings.

Aldehyde fresh, citrus spiked peach punch, garnished with tropical flowers for an hour at the beginning, that warms up with spicy carnations and white flowers, heavy on sweet tuberose. Dry woods at the bottom anchor it at arms length for the day and to clothes for the night.

I love the ’70’s intrigue movie vibe to it, sea-kissed Jacqueline Bisset from The Deep, Gloria Hendry in the patchwork bikini in Live and Let Die.

Luckily, it’s easy to find a vintage bottle, and it seems to keep well.

morioh1999

Time for a confession.

I didn't like Chloe when I first tried her. She didn't give me a headache or anything like that, I just thought it was too floral-y for my tastes. Like being a child and getting into your grandmother's perfume collection. My mom actually made a point to say I was wearing "old lady perfume" whenever I wore Chloe.
But now! I love her! Before everything shut down due to COVID I wore Chloe everywhere, to the grocery store, on the bus, to class, work, everywhere. Got a few compliments on it, but not enough to make it my all-time signature scent. Sometimes I'll use Chloe when I get out of the shower, as the scent seems a little out of season for the upcoming months. It's more of a spring/summer scent, rather than fall/winter. I'm running low on my current bottle, so I think when March rolls around I might buy a new one.

Juicysweet

I'm wearing this as I read and drink coffee on my back patio. This scent is not for everyone but I love it! The weather is in the mid 50s and sunny. I have learned to spray this baby strategically as it can overtake you if you overspray. It seems to last longer on my clothes than my body. I have lately been wearing it to bed and it's heavenly to me. I get the aldehydes and tuberose immediately. There's a faint peachiness and the musk is on point to my nose. When it settles down it's beautiful! Most importantly for me, this fragrance reminds me of the 1970s and I consider it a classic perfume of that era.

meg0825

I love fragrances from the 70's. I'm so glad I found this one. Green and soapy at first with a big dose of aldehydes and hyacinth. Then the tuberose and carnation start to settle in with a hint of peach and coconut in the background. A soft mossy-woody dry down. Creamy and a little powdery, but not overly sweet. Great stuff!

eau de nath

This fragrance pictures me in the busy morning streets of Paris during the modernization age, where the streets are bustling with noisy old cars, women wearing coats and hats walking to the florist and cafè. It smells like a beautiful vintage classic

The initial notes greets you with a tiny hint of sweetness from the peach which quickly dissipates combined with a prominent floral-aldehydic scent. The floral-aldehydic scent which smells just a bit waxy and lemony (in a nice way) is accompanied by a soapy and powdery smell which dries down to a smooth woody finish. I find most of the notes of this fragrance to be consistent from top note to drydown. A nice classic floral powdery feminine fragrance with a good sillage.

Cita

This was the first perfume I every had my aunt brought it for me and I rember wearing it every day I love it so much it was so pretty and just smell like a beautiful woman I haven’t Worn it since my childhood but I may just buy it to see if it holds the same happy place for me

imoore

If you take off it the tuberose you get Mitsouko (newer bottle). Now it is more of a chypre than a floral to my senses. Very lady like in summer time. Lovely and highly recommended for over 40.

WijayantiKusuma

Okay, i got an old version in a mini bottle. I knew from the color that this is going to be a heavy one. To my surprised, it's heavy white florals and powdery. I don't like it, i loveeee it!

Leopold

Ultra feminine! I bought it as a tribute to my all time hero Karl Lagerfeld, who designed the bottle with the lovely stopper. I begged my mum to buy it in 1991 so I could smell it on her. Back then the bottle was the same as now but with frosted glass and a white logo. The current version seems quite faithfull to what I remember of this scent. I have a feeling it really is discontinued now, even in drugstores and outlet, which forced me to order it. Let’s face it, I can’t see how it could sell anymore. It’s chemical, it’s super loud, it smells dated. And by the way not the best use of tuberose in my opinion. I love many old scents with tuberose like Loulou and Poison. But here, the peach / tuberose combo does not stand the test of time absolutely. Or maybe the reformulation is to blame? Maybe a vintage would be better for wearing. The original Karl Lagerfeld pour homme in its current formulation suffers from the same issues as this one. They both went from upmarket to outlet and that explains probably why they are not so well executed anymore. Nostalgia indeed, but very little else going here I’m afraid...

JaimeLaParfum

I bought this fragrance on sale and I don't love it. It smells clean but synthetic out of the bottle. On my skin it smells more natural, but there is something off-putting about the scent (maybe the tuberose?). I mostly use this as a room spray. I might still wear it during spring or autumn, but it is definitely not a favourite and I would not repurchase.

Roses and Thyme

Chloe original is such a cheerful scent. There’s something about it, possibly the tuberose combined with peach, that makes it smell a little like sunshine. It works best for me on a warm spring day.

I get oakmoss (probably artificial in my bottle) tuberose, a little peach but only for some sweetness; this not a “peach” perfume, and I don’t smell the aldehydes in a sparkling way but I get more the fatty essence of them. I can see the comparisons to soap (Dove, to my nose).

If you enjoy more vintage type scents, or just looking for something unique in today’s world, try it out. I remember when it was sold at department stores but I found mine at a drugstore.

Miasha

I was happy to find that this is still available, I thought it disappeared from the market when the new Chloe, rosy one, which I love by the way, came instead. I thought then, that I wanted both.
When I bought this recently, I realized that it is not quite the same as the earlier Lagerfeld version. That one was sweeter, softer and deeper at the same time I think. And I got that as the first Christmas gift perfume I recieved from my husband, in 1983 - I was so happy, and he was so happy too, to be able to give it to me, since we were quite poor back then! ( The very first christmas he gave me a sheepfur saddlewarmer for my bike...❤️)
I had a couple of bottles of that first version, and the third time I got it, it was this newer version in the oval bottle. But I did not realize then, that it was reformulated. Or was it not? This was around 2000 I think.
But when I recieved the bottle I have now, I got a little bit disappointed, because now it is definitely reformulated. And maybe my taste and perception of perfumes has changed a bit too, I don’t know, because I think it feels a bit dated now. I still like it and I’m glad I have it for old times sake, but it is not a love like before.
But I cherish the memory of my late husbands happy face when I opened my christmas gift...

spritzedsilly2

I can remember the first time I smelled this perfume. Back when I was in 7th grade and sitting in science class. I thought it was the most beautiful fragrance I'd ever smelled. So grown up and so classy. ( Back in the late 70's I think)

It was the first designer perfume I ever bought. I always have a bottle. It's been reformulated and lost some of its beauty. I still love it though.

JustSimpleThings

Upon first spritz, the aldehydes dominate and I get a non-sweet peach accord as well.

3 hours in now, the fragrance has become more sweet and round, with amber, floral notes and coconut mingling. The carnation is very present as well.

This is definitely a beautiful perfume, well worth experimenting with. Very interesting composition, it feels classically elegant yet effortless.

churinl

I really liked this back in the 80s, so when I recently purchased a set of four minis (in an effort to build up my stock of original Organza Indecence, which is why I purchased it), I was looking forward to trying it again. What I remembered the most about it was the peach note, not having the nose or knowledge to identify any other notes. Of course, the opening is off, but as a lover of many vintage perfumes, I knew not to pass judgment until it had a chance to settle down. Once it did, I immediately recognized the tuberose, and was happy to have even a mini, which is labeled as Parfum, with Parfums International listed as the distributor. Does it strike me as particularly sophisticated? No, not really. Do I think it is pretty in a loud white floral sort of way? Yes, definitely. Fortunately, I love this type of sweet, nectary peach and tuberose. Can I see why it would give many perfumistas a headache? Absolutely. But I love it for what it is - a heavy explosion of sweetened tuberose that now comes to me full of znostalgia from a time when I didn't care about the art of perfumery. I just knew what I thought smelled good, and that was more than enough for me! I still love it!
PS - those who remember this being in drug stores as teens in the 70s must have had some very high end drug stores, or Chloe must have decided to aim for more exalted ground in the 80s! I remember this being sold in department stores when I first encountered it, and that actually meant something in those days.

angienotesjunkie

I used to wear this as a teenager, so when I saw a bottle nostalgia got the better of me.

Unfortunately I just can't wear it anymore. Even the slightest spray has become headache inducing and nauseating. I think I've possibly developed an intolerance to aldehydes, as my mothers signature, Chanel No.5, also has the same effect.
Such a shame. I used to love it.

annxyz

This may not be your idea of a hipster scent , but I think it is the most feminine perfume I have ever owned . I totally adore it , possibly because I would receive it for Christmas when I was a young mother and wife . My husband and children loved it on me. When the formula was first created it was not a cheap scent at all and sold in nice department stores. Later on it was found in drug stores, and still is . It has been around since 1975 ! There are good reasons it still sells - it is a tribute to classic femininity created by esteemed designer, Karl Lagerfeld ( recently deceased ). This smells like femininity in a bottle . It is not an overtly sexy scent , but it it is sexy in a soft and alluring form that does not conjure up images of stiletto heels .

Chloe has been reformulated and I still like it , but notice some missing notes and it is less complex and intense these days . Even in the reformulated state it is still quite pretty and a huge seller for almost 50 years . Recently I stumbled on to another perfume that is a dupe of the original that seems closer to the 1980s version I wore. It is called “Hawaii” by Milton Lloyd and is extremely inexpensive . If you like this kind of scent, check out Hawaii which is more complex and richer . Chloe and Hawaii are probably the two perfumes I would choose as my favorites of all times . They are not hipster scents , but they are lovely .

violetbelle

I'm sure I sniffed the nozzle of this perfume at some point in the 90s and (probably, truthfully) crinkled my nose. I couldn't remember what it smelled like, but something kept drawing me back to reconsider. I finally blind bought it and am so glad I did! This is signature worthy. Just creamy, light and feminine. It smells golden to me.

I don't get any sharpness or cloying peach. Instead, the coconut comes through in a way that isn't quite tropical, but clean, warm, a little sweet combined with amber. It's what you'd wear to smell like you've just stepped out of a shower, pulled on your favorite white T or silk camisole with a blazer and best fitting jeans, minimal makeup. Classic.

idolinam

reminds me of Giorgio Giorgio Beverly Hills for women.

Chloe, the original, is EXTREMELY similar to a Brazilian scent, Cecita, from O Boticário. Since Cecita was a very well known perfume and predates Chloe by almost 10 years, you reach your conclusions. Cecita is still sold in Brazil, though diluted by many reformulations (it was a very potent scent, beloved by Brazilians in the 80s and early 90s, since at that time foreign perfumes were unbeliavably prohibitive to the population and Cecita had great longevity , projection and sillage).

medusa666

LOVE Lagerfeld's Chloe! Τimeless, one of a kind scent.

It smells heavenly in hot weather. The heat releases its unique scent and it smells so beautiful.
It's the kind of vintage perfume that has that distinctive quality fragrance about it, very feminine.

At dry down, all its beauty is expelled. It is a fresh, sweet-coconuty/tuberosy scent mixed with peach, jasmine, narcissus, carnation, ylang-ylang and aldehydes, this is a must have fragrance!
Luxurious and delightful! Once you make it yours, you won’t be able to go a day without this fragrance..It's addictive..

I'd like to recommend the vintage version of this as worth trying -- I have fond memories of my high school sweetheart smelling wonderful wearing it in the 80s :-)

It was a distinctive floral, feminine, classy, and long-lasting.
It could be called conservative, but young women wore it.

It projected enough to draw you in closer, but not so much that it begged for attention from strangers standing six feet away, which is ideal if you ask me.

goeswithness

Like someone above stated, this was in drug stores when I was a teenager in the '70s, and it was very popular with kids, but way too tuberose-y for me!

Phantomias

Chloe is a mystery to me. I have both vintage versions, and all I get from them is musty overripe peach and a tiny hint of vinegar. No tuberose - I wish! Nasty aldehydes, a touch of wilting rose and that rotten peach ... Chloe hates me and I hate it right back.
Sillage and lasting power are good, which adds insult to injury.

Anamandy

I was a teen when this scent was out. At that time fragrances like Gloria Vanderbilt, Charlie, Bonnie Belle, etc. were readily available in drug stores targeting young people and inexpensive enough that we, or our boyfriends, could afford to purchase them. All the teens were wearing scents like that while our parents were wearing My Sin, Chanel, Dior, Tabu, Emeraude, etc. Not many in HS were wearing Chloe, but I do remember the scent as an older sister wore it at one time. Recently I smelled Chloe at a discount store, and it smelled cheap. A strong alcohol blast on first spray leading to a suffocating tuberose and syrupy peachy notes. To me this fragrance was always heavy, especially since I was into light airy florals at the time, but I never remember it smelling like this. Now it was sweet like so many fragrances are today. What a difference time has made in fragrance geared towards the young. Today, candy is being marketed as scent. Sweet fragrances were part of the toy make-up kits we played with when we were children. Is the sweet perfume craze a reflection of level of maturity today? I don't know, but I often wonder if we were offered the sweet scents of today back then, would they have been as popular?

whatsthatsmell205

Notes are for a vintage BethCo EDT spray ... the opening is straight out of a can of Aqua Net, but I dig it. I don't find this overly sweet—definitely not a syrupy sweet like, say, Amarige or Chloé Narcisse. I can smell the flowers, but the aldehydes, oakmoss, and carnation give it a peppery green edge. I find this unisex.

astrid_astaria

Wore this in my teens, and actually was shocked to see a bottle of it at TJMAXX the other day. Didn't know it was still manufactured! I forgot about it. Maybe I will get another for good times sake.

Peachypool

Honestly this perfume reminded me of Charlie Blue and Chanel no. 5. I brought this right back to the store. I'm not a huge fan of alderhydic scents. This was too strong for my sensitive nose.

roxyjuliet

This is lovely. So much better than the (totally different) EDP newer version.
This fragrance is heaven in the warm weather.

PerfumeEmpress

annxyz, let me add my kudos to the rest. Your review is spot on. I used to wear Chloe when I was young to great acclaim, if I say so myself.

But I guess you can't teach the mass-market "girly" fruit-punch addicts.

felicite34

annxyz - SO true. I cannot improve on your review. This is lovely, the tuberose is so warm and cozy and sexy in a low key way. Very well blended. I would say this is more of a fall/winter perfume. This one is a classic.
Edit: Cooler weather here and again, I find myself reaching for this classic. The tuberose in this is wonderful and warm.
Edit:I have verified that Coty has discontinued this. It does not fit in with their brand and current perfumes trends. Sad. You would think something that is popular since 1975 would get a pass, but no :(

FilleDeParfum

Very, very dated initially but after 20 minutes it settles and there is a beautiful warm luxurious scent. It's buttery and spicy on my skin.

nitschevo

Amen, annxyz, amen. Completely agree with you.

annxyz

This perfume says “woman “ . It is the ultimate feminine floral . I can not understand why it is not preferred over the new generic and over priced version. This has much more warmth and depth .

Some reviews call it “dated” . How so ? Because it does not smell like berry jam or marmalade ? There are many things that would be considered dated , like a John Constable or Renoir painting . Many of the most striking creations are found in museums and galleries and revered. Do we need to dismiss something because it has been around a while ? Is it to be disregarded because our mother wore it ?
There was a time when women were less inclined to strive to be the sexiest woman in the room . This is a perfume for a woman who has no need to be a vamp . She is comfortable with her own skin and her definition of femininity is not dependent on being like everyone else, nor on being sexually provocative .

I wore this as a young mother ( thirty years ago ) and my husband loved the way it smelled on me . I am a grandma now, and was prepared to purchase the “new “ Chloe while shopping with a good friend. She said to me “ I still think the original Chloe is much prettier “. I agreed with her because it is richer and more distinctive in my opinion.

Waltzing Matilda

A huge thank you to MoreScentsThanDollars for a great swap which allowed me to join the party - I don't know where I've been in regards to Chloe. It's a very pleasing fragrance with a white floral base. Sophisticated and stylish, Chloe will be in my meagre collection for the long haul. Delightful!

Mrs. ELE Arjona

Smelled this the other day at Khols. It reminds me of Elizabeth Taylor Diamonds and Emeralds a bit, very orange blossom honeysuckle. A bit old fashioned maybe for some, but I love that sort of fragrance, if I didn't have such a large bottle of ET Emeralds and half a bottle of Avon Rare Gold perhaps I could justify purchasing a bottle.

hels

I was gifted this when I turned 16 in 1987.
Oh how much I wish I could once again smell it’s original warm peachy scent... The memories that would come flooding back.

moonrise

Monster sillage and longevity!
I know this perfume can give you 'old lady smell' vibe but to me this is still so pleasant, it wraps you in mother's love. Total classic! Very flowery but So gentle, so warm. Very rich indeed. I use sparingly when i go out in the evening.

samantham-123

Ive been thinking of replacing my bottle of this that i bought on a whim a few years ago; i was in the chemist just browsing for no reason and happened apon a bottle of Chloe. There were no testers but I gave it a go anyway.
On me it was a beautiful spicy rose with a peppery note that im guessing was the carnation. Lasts AGES, couple of sprays and its there all day.
At the time i was all of about 22 years old, yet i loved the heady spicy vintage aroma. So much so that im tempted to buy a replacement bottle just thinking about it.
Its not something you'll find being made in this modern day trend of light fruity florals.

Jobob

This was my 1st fine fragrance. It was my signature fragrance for years. I wore this on my wedding day and wear it every year on my anniversary. A beautiful intense floral that lasts for hours. My youngest daughter has made Chloe her signature fragrance now .
Update! I am over the moon! I was unpacking perfumes that I had boxed up from my days of working in the fragrance and cosmetics industry in the late 70’s and 80’s and I found my vintage Chloe perfume in the Lalique crystal bottle and it still smells divine! It’s so much softer than the new formula.

greyhoundmom

This smells like something a pretty but plain bookish lady might wear.. a librarian or an algebra teacher, a long haired brunette in a cardigan and glasses. A woman that is quiet and soft spoken but knows who she is.

Dusty, slightly spicy florals.. dusty like an antique store with that spicy scent of old wood furniture and old books and old clothes with a tiny bit of Chanel No 5 still clinging to them.

I dig it!

mschnabel666

I got a vintage Chloe, 50ml, like the above bottle but def a Lagerfeld box. At first I thought it was musty/soapy and powdery and I liked it fine... but you must try on skin!

On skin I get SWEET buttery tuberose and coconut. Damn, it really really smells like melted butter- lol! Sadly I don't get much moss (got more moss/greens on fabric from my first test) just very potent full tuberose/coconut in a very very nice sweet way. Opens with aldehydes too. I find it quite sweet, and reminds me of Chloe Narcisse in that way.

I wanted to get woody mossy musk but it never came. I will say, it stayed POTENT on my shirt, but the skin application which developed/changed more, disappeared rather quickly- which is probably why I didn't smell the base. Despite this being a vintage bottle, I found the skin lasting power to be disappointing. However, I was heavy handed and the shirt sillage was HUGE, but did stay linear in the middle notes. I put a squirt of Silences on my skin later that night thinking it would boost the moss/green drydown of Chloe, but it was AWFUL (lol) and the potent Chloe from my shirt took over easily in 5 minutes.

I went to ebay to check out how cheap a small bottle of the current formula cost... and... well... I found another vintage and bought it. Haha. The 3.0, 90% full FROSTED bottle this time. YAY! $20!

I do like this. I don't find it dated or OL, it does have some vintage charm- but that is why I LOVE vintage scents.

Azula

The quintessential "grandma" fragrance

Lagerfeld's Chloe smells of freshly washed linen drying in the sun, lilac blossoms and creamy, honeyed white flowers resting on a classic chypre base of bittersweet dry moss. A delicate beauty that evokes effortless refined elegance and warm maternal hugs. So pretty!

Blueflowers

Enjoying this, my mother’s favorite, now that the weather is FINALLY warming up and feeling more like spring. A nice daytime fragrance, good for work if used sparingly.

The aldehydes in the beginning provide a sparkly-soapy clean, invigorating start, then I get hints of peach and coconut. The flowers arrive, but are over-arched by a creamy tuberose that dominates for the majority of the fragrance. It ends with a musky soft sweet tuberose with a faded sparkle of aldehydes.

It definitely has a classic vibe that I enjoy, but it doesn’t feel dated at all. The modern EDT I have is pretty strong for the first few hours, but softens down nicely after that. Perfectly serviceable, no complaints here.

Q80

Tuberose, peaches, and aldehydes with hints of coconut!

The coconut swings between the notes freely as i can detect it with allot of roses, narcissus, jasmines, carnation, oakmoss, sandalwood, ylang, and orange blossoms. I can detect lilac, musk, hiacynth, cedar, and orris.

This is a blend of floral sweet with coconut, and woods. I've see this in a local antique vintage shop and it ran out of stock quite fast, and now i just understood why it want out that easy and fast. Impressive

simetra23

The new formula bears almost no resemblance to the one I used to wear in the 1970s, except for the top notes, maybe. But back then there was no artificial feel to it whatsoever. I would dab two drops behind my ears and what I smelled felt absolutely genuine. I bought the reformulation for the sake of having the bottle, but the scent itself is hideous.

Perfumeroo

I found this one at CVS. The bottle looked like the "old formula". I worked with a girl who wore this back in the 90s. The scent I experienced was nothing like I remembered. It was a bitter-type aldehyde that did not evolve into anything more appealing. Darn. I will be donating this one to the next neighbor yard sale.

dglightblue

Chloe Chloe also known as the original (I’ve been told).

Top not s I don’t mind, this isn’t my fav fragrance genre.
White floral
Powdery
Soapy
Yeah there’s the aldehydes (which I dislike)

It’s not horrible, for context I dislike lots of fragrances that others love when it comes to florals and aldehydes.

I might layer this to make it mine if ever I was gifted a bottle. I think it’s worth trying from a price point standing.

Chic-girl

I finally got a tiny miniature and it was love at first sniff. This is so delicious, ah, that tuberose, very sweet but not cloying, fresh, because there is not vanilla. So creamy and yummy. To my nose there is everything in balance, nothing too much, even coconut, which can be sometimes too strong and dominant. But it's there, and I love it.
Sometimes when I need something sweet, This is a very good choice.

Starlett_Sexton

Chloe reminds me of a fresher less starchy version of White Linen edp. Sadly, Chloe is everything I wished White Linen would of been. Chloe has a bubble gum Tuberose kind of sweetness too it, some may call this old lady or even out dated, Yet, I find Chloe too be quite the opposite I love Chloe and have worn this since the 1970s on and off. Longevity is pretty good sillage is pretty good. What a joy too wear and I get compliments daily. It doesn’t get any better than this.

savageinstrangeland

I really, really, really like this! This has the potential to become love. I have a thing for vintage or old school fragrances that standout from the infinite sea of sweeties lining modern shelves. However, they can't be "too old school." I'm picky. Some 70's and 80's fragrances are favorites for me but I struggle with finding a place to wear them so I just don't! lol My Poison and Paloma Picasso are like that. They collect dust because it's hard to wear them in the modern world despite their beauty. I want that standout vintage smell without feeling completely out of place wearing it today. Chloe fits the bill perfectly. It's timeless, though it hints gently at times gone by, and it just works!

The Aldehyde & Tuberose combo lend a "classy classic" feel to the fragrance. It is creamy. It's clean. It's not soft but it doesn't scream either. It has a certain balance that I really appreciate. Some reviewers say peach is prominent, but I don't get the peach and I'm glad. I don't typically love heavy peach. I will edit with any revelations after a few more wears but it's fantastic so far! I would say this is one of the better "starter classics" for people just beginning to explore vintage fragrances!

charlie.aeroplane

It breaks my heart that this perfume has so many dislikes!
For me, this is the senorita version of Chanel no 5, how someone else said in a comment smells like luxurious french soap, I usually dislike heady pure florals like Organza, Anais Anais or 5th Avenue, but this is not that, it has something so alluring, sexy but aristocratic. it remembers you what it means to be a woman and why you should be proud to be. Deep, it's like the person who wears it has something, a secret or a way of seeing things you will never understand, but you cant stop trying and falling for her. The vintage vibe is subtle, just enough to make you get into the trap of melancholy of golden times/dolce vita period.
I might be just lucky with the chemistry, but this perfume helps me feel like I'm living my life, and I do it in the most beautiful way. Its pure glow and sensuality, a perfume for a nymph!

Mona Lygre

I had it when I was young, I love this perfume so very much, so, I bought a new bottle now, and it smells so fantastic, it makes me feel so happy!

Sherihan

I received it in Karl's version, the frosted bottle, and it smells so powdery and innocent, exactly as I remember it from early 90's. From the box and packaging I can say this bottle is also from early 90's.....
This perfume is inexplicable and un-copy-abl, it is an Egyptian pyramid, it is a Sophia Loren, you will not see/smell something like it. But it has to be Karl Lagarfeld's version, not Coty's (Parfums Chloe). I tried both, and the old formula is way much nicer, and powderier. Love it, and stocked some extra.

Cubby

How I loved this back in the 1980s. I also had dusting powder, which was gorgeous!!!!

Violet_Rose

Wearing this perfume today after washing off a disaster vintage Vivara which left me with burning rubber in my nostrils. Chloe is a perfume I remember from the late 80's but it didn't appeal to me then. I wore Miss Dior original, Rochas Femme, Magie Noir, Opium, Cinnabar and Jolie Madame in my 20's so Chloe seemed a bit lacking in sophistication for me.

However I'm visiting vintage fragrances now I have the inclination to indulge. This one is a new version of the vintage, in the same bottle and packaging as shown at the top of the page. After wearing Chloe for a few hours now, I am enjoying the perfume. The aldehydes are clear as well as the florals and tuberose. I'm quite a tuberose aficionado these days and this one isn't tuberose heavy enough for me to want to buy another bottle in a hurry. But I will wear and enjoy it. The longevity isn't great though so I've reapplied.

JacquieDS

Wow! This stuff is powerful. I am recently craving Tuberose, and lovely members here have suggested Chloe and Amarige, so I tried both. I like them both a lot. Amarige is bright and uplifting. This one is soapy and knocked me out in a good way.
Nothing I have smelt before....just this loud soapy opening, then turning dusky floral.
Its addictive to me.
I have yet to decide which one to get, but I think right now, its both.

Huckleberry

I first had this is the mid to late 80's while attending college. I wore this and Anais Anais a lot. They were my intro to the big powerhouses of silage. Decades have passed, and I moved on from these to other styles.

However, I kept seeing this at TJMAXX, but always passed on it for years because I heard the reformulation was crap. Finally about 4 months ago, I saw a gift set with a damaged box for $14.99 for a large bottle and a giant lotion...what the hell, I'm going for it.

To be honest, it's just the way I remembered it. It doesn't smell different, and it's still quite strong. 2 sprays-7 hours, I retroactively say sorry to all my friends back in the 80's because I know I did much more than 2 sprays back in the day. I'm really loving this again, I wish I can hug my 18 year old self and say it all worked out and thanks for the memories.

Some might relate to this: the relationship I have with Chloe (this one- not the new stuff) is similar to a relationship one might have with a troublesome lover. Wearing it is like having a passionate torrid affair with someone who you know is all wrong for you, yet they keep drawing you in.

Chloe is a very lovely scent- certainly one of the all time greats- but it's so intense and animalic! Generally I gravitate towards fresh clean and fun fragrances; picks that are pleasant and easy to wear. Chloe is... sort of naughty. To be sure, it qualifies as a romantic scent. But it's the part of romance that happens after dinner at the fancy restaurant and the long evening stroll by the water. It's what happens when you get back to the hotel after all that. It smells like love, affection, a box of Valentine's Day chocolates, wet bedsheets and lingerie strewn over the chair. Yes, it's "love", but love in real-time; warts and all.

Listen. I love it. But it's so hard to wear outside of the house!

mychinarose

Today's Chloe (the one in the square bottle) I find to be just wretched. It doesn't hold a candle to this original Chloe, which I first smelled in 1982. This was my teenaged aunt's favorite perfume. One year I decided to buy her a bottle for Christmas only to keep it for myself instead! I recently bought a vintage mini parfum and it is exactly as I remember it. I wore it today and it was just surprisingly modern to me, still relevant. This is tuberose with enough warmth and fruity complexity that it can be worn anytime, day or night. I highly recommend the vintage minis.

gtabasso

spicy, tuberose, mossy floral; very rich and deep; not a chypre but not a white floral; lovely

nitschevo

My mother used to wear this back in the day and had a bottle of the original formula until a few months ago, I believe. Yes (as with Opium and many other fragrances) this has been simplified and somewhat cut down. BUT it's still a very very nice fragrance that sets itself apart from the flood of sameish sweet fragrances. I tested it two days ago - one spritz on the back of my hand. The opening is a little harsh but as we know by now - I ignored that and continued with my business. About 30 minutes later a beautiful aroma reached my nose and sticked with me throughout the evening (even after doing the dishes). Peachy, creamy florals with the tuberose and carnation being rather prominent on me. Not dated but definitely different and "perfumey", this - amongst others of course - is the smell of a woman. I want a bottle!

violetstorm

its a shame they discontinued the old formula..........it was a beautiful strong creamy floral scent............i just loved it..........the re-created version im sad to say just doesnt cut it........smells to chemical for me - it lacks the creaminess.........and where the heck are the aldehydes lol - not in the re-created version......and the beautiful honeysuckle & tuberose in the original just doesnt shine in the re-created version..........i think its time for this one to be put to sleep lol............but i do love the "new" chloe (in the square bottle ) & the whole "new" chloe line - which is nothing like this recreated version - so dont get them confused :)

foofoo14

Amazingly enough, I spotted this beauty at an antique collective this afternoon!! I was very excited to find a fairly full bottle. It is the original and smells so lush with the slight siren call of the tuberose, but it is not nearly as overwhelming as Fracas. Here it is an hour later and it has mellowed out a bit, to a more green/lush blend with the floral. I am very happy that it appeared to me out of the blue, as it did.

DulciusExAsperis

Recently bought a vintage, Lagerfeld version, from eBay. Mostly for sentimental purposes, as it was one of the fragrances my mother would wear (and I frequently stole from her medicine cabinet for a spritz) when I was a child.

This has all the elements I remember. On me, the peach is creamy and prominent and I blame this perfume for my peach obsession of today. Of course, it may also have something to do with my love of tuberose. We start early, right? There's something so satisfying about the round fruit-shaped frosted bottle with its silver cap.

I don't adore it as much as I used to - these days I prefer fewer aldehydes, something less big, less '80s-feeling - but I still reach for it when I'm feeling nostalgic. It's like the comfort food of fragrances for me.

Itchy&Scratchy

An early memory of mine being very little-4or5-is this bottle standing on its box on my mother's boudoir. My mother was never a perfume person. She always had one or two fragrances. This is the only one i can recall almost as a dream.
Now this is a so peculiar perfume...in a good way. It stands out of the bunch and is a love or hate perfume. So...i love it. It opens with the most medicinal aldehydes followed straight away with the tuberose. The tuberose stays there while the aldehydes dissipate introducing the peach which is creamy. Don't forget about the moss. Is here in the backstage keeping all the notes interesting and saving them by become dull and another 70-80s perfume. This is the most spectacular of this frag. The oakmoss keeps all together and don't let them become sugary sweet. The drydown is very smooth because the sandalwood enters the game and stays that way till the end
Longevity is superb-8to10h
Sillage on my dry skin radiates within arms length

Timby

A little goes a long was, as do most vintages, esp from that era.

It is elegant, and sophisticated. Much like I wanted to be when i wore it in the 70's..to be honest I think it was too grown up for me at that time...but I loved it then and wore it just the same.
I wear it now mostly for nostalgic reasons. Brings back great memories. But aside from that, it is a fantastic fragrance. And the added bonus is you won't smell like a variation of everyone else...you will be different.

I cant stand smelling like candy floss, or like every other person. I clearly remember the time when CK one was launched, and EVERYbody, men and women, were wearing the same thing. Went to the movies, and the whole theatre was CK one!
Seriously?

It's more of a winter, special occasion scent, I would not recommend it for the office.

If there has been a reformulation, I cannot tell, at least not from my memory of 40 years ago.The version now available is fine enough for me.

If youu want a distinctive, sultry, creamy scent, give this a try.

Your prodigal daughter has returned mother Chloe..two years ago I left you convinced I needed to find myself something new after all the years we had been together. From my very first miniature when I was about 10 to all the bottles I've repurchased without a second thought. I'm back dear lady. This time I treated myself to the vintage by Karl Lagerfeld. It's so nice. It's not dripping and oozing sweet sugar..it's just a light breezy version of today's incarnation. I like both to be honest but the vintage is more crowd friendly.

anita thompson.monroe

I wore this when it was first introduced in 1975..I loved it then and it is still one of my favorites..The parfum is the best way to experience it, and a little dab is enough..It brings such wonderful memories, just as classic scents are supposed to do.. I hope never to be without it...

Wow. This perfume is amazing.

I was shopping at Marshall's with my mother this afternoon when she stopped to look at a box set of perfume and lotion. She looked at it and said, "You know, I wore this for years right after I met your dad. Think he will still recognize the scent?" Mind you, my parents have been married for over 30 years. So we buy the (very reasonably priced) box set and head home for a Father's Day celebration. She dabs on a bit of the lotion on our way.

After getting home she has my dad smell her wrists. "Hey! I know this!" He says. My mom's eyes light up. He remembered this after so many years.

On my way home from dinner I stopped back by Marshall's to pick up a set for myself. I didn't really pay attention to what the fragrance smelled like, but I wanted it just knowing it was special to my mom. I sprayed a bit on and started my drive home.

MY GOOD LORD. This stuff is great! Slightly suffocating when you first spray it on (it's harsh, y'all) but give it 15 minutes and you're surrounded in a halo of creamy, clean goodness. It's so hard to describe.. it's not too sweet, not too in-your-face and CERTAINLY not too old fashioned. I'm 25, for the record.

What a funny little afternoon. Can't wait to explore this fragrance more.

There is a subtle mystery about this fragrance.

Nuitdenoel

I have the Chloe, Parfums Chloe version. Never smelled the Lagerfield version, unfortunately, so I cannot comment on that version. Not the Chloe New, either.

The Chloe I have is still wonderful. Completely different than anything being released lately. It is a heady, sensuous floral but the addition of the aldehydes keeps it from being syrupy and heavy. It is so beautiful. Warm but totally appropriate for summer wear. I was actually hoping it would be more powerful and have stronger sillage and projection.

This is immediately going into my Top 5 favorites.

UPDATE: Wow, what a beautiful scent. Dried down to a lovely, slightly soapy (think Ivory) floral. This really is perfect for summer. It may be a faux pas to mention this, but I'm getting a slight EL White Linen vibe (which I almost got, instead of the Chloe). I can also smell traces of what inspired Chloe Narcisse, which is a favorite of mine. This is NOT overpowering or a sillage monster. Now, I'm going to have to track down some vintage. If this is what the reformulation smells like, I might die of happiness if I get vintage.

Cairo Rose

My mother's signature scent...but the perfume was a bit too much for her...She wore the cream from a jar...after a shower she would just add a dab to her skin and it became part of HER...Rich, luxurious, powdery ...she smelled chic. Over the years I have learned that some heavy hitter perfumes need to be away from the face to be enjoyed and sometimes just the creams and lotions are enough to make you perfectly perfumed.

chloeh

This is another one I love, as it's another one of the few vintage perfumes that seem to suit my body chemistry.

It doesn't seem to be too sweet, or overpowering (if used in small doses) on me.

It's just sweet enough and a little spicy.

Almost edible, especially once the flowers fade a little - but, definitely not in that sickly, artificial candy type way many contemporary perfumes have.

It's very far from that.

It's more like a spiced fruit dessert.

Almost Christmasy, even.

I also happen to really like the Chloe fashion house; so, it's kind of like it was meant to be.

When I was a little girl, my mum didn't like Chloe very much.

Whereas vintage perfumes tend to go sour on me, they tended to go overly sweet on her.

So, it's totally understandable that she would have considered Chloe a no-no for her.

She said she didn't like musk very much and it is fairly musky, I guess?

Also, she had more of a stylish, but slightly androgynous vibe, which didn't really gel with the whole "Chloe girl" look.

Whereas, as a little girl, I was really into feminine stuff.

I remember standing in Boots with her and being very drawn to the beautiful, calla lily bottles and the sweet, heady smell.

I even liked the soft shape of the letters, saying "Chloe" and the accent over the e.

I remember I pointed over at the Chloe counter and said "What about Chloe?".

She said "Chloe?! No.", very firmly and scoffed slightly, at the very idea. xD

I'm sure I saw the Chloe sales assistant, who was looking over at us, smile at me somewhat sympathetically, lol.

Looking back, it was quite funny.

Anyway, gorgeous, slightly sultry, feminine fragrance, as long as it suits your body chemistry.

I haven't tried the new version, by the way - I'm mainly referring to old vintage bottles of the pure parfum, in the little glass-stoppered bottles.

Those bottles are so beautiful.

Wish there were still bottles (and perfumes) like that, now.

Imagine a little bottle like this, with a frosted, graduated, light dusty pink orchid stopper, for example.

But, I digress...

Tracyarts

Since my first review, I've added a small bottle of the vintage pure parfum to my collection. It's a beautiful heavy floral perfume. Tuberose is the top note, and it's very rich and heady. I don't get the sharpness of the EDT in the pure parfum. And with it being a splash/dab on bottle, it's easy to apply with a light hand so as not to be radiating a sillage cloud that can fill a room.

TaleOfTheRose

This voluptuous perfume foreshadows the 80’s powerhouse perfume trend even it was created in 1975. It opens with bright aldehydic peach and floral galore. Then it is dominated by the sweet intoxicating tuberose. A touch of coconut gives an opaque-ish finish. The amber, sandalwood and benzoin drydown is sumptuous despite it is in the vintage EDT concentrate.
Elena Vosnaki from Perfume Shrine described it as “a white floral centered on tuberose, flower of spiritual ruin, carnal, feminine and feisty.”

laurniko

I'm amazed. I first tried this in winter, because my mom used to wear it, and it was a headache inducing nightmare. I just wore it again, last night, on a warm night in March, and either my hormones have changed or my nose has changed bc this is intoxicating. If this is Tuberose I need to cancel my Bandit lust and get Fracas immediately. Or both. Because this is very warm, sweet, and sexy. I can't believe I wrote it off as a headachy "70s perfume". This is a great scent for spring, but really would be good for any time of the year. I can't smell any one note in particular but overall I get a sweet, fuzzy vibe. I would definitely feel okay wearing this to work, Mother's Day Brunch, and I just wore it out this weekend for my anniversary dinner. Great for this time of year when Spring is around the corner but it's still cold enough to warrant a cozy scent.

My father bought my mother a bottle of this in the 80s, and I associated it with watching her put on her glamorous dresses and do her hair before she went to some fabulous event with my dad, who was a travel writer in the 80s. I bought it blind for the memory of her, and I wish this worked for me but it doesn't. I respect and worship Uncle Karl and I love the history of this perfume, and especially love reading everybody's amazing stories below, but this is suffocating to me and doesn't settle into my skin or become my own scent in any way. Admittedly, I'm not a floral gal, but this works SO well on my mom. I would be happy to trade the big 3oz bottle I have with somebody or do a sample swap bc it is a classic, and if it works on you, a great bargain that smells expensive!

austedd

I grabbed it as a blind buy at one of the big department stores while visting US for crazy cheap price.
Right now I can't make up my mind if i love ir or not. I spray it on myself ocassionaly and sometimes I regret it - the tuberose is just too strong for me, especially becouse I'm not the flowery scents type. It has strong vintage vibe, so be carefull if you don't like that type of fragnances.
But overall this scent transfers kinda beutifly and I like it after a few hours.

If I'm really honest. I just can't tell that this powerhouse fragrance has been reformulated. To my untrained olfactory nose it smells just as good as it did years ago and all the notes are there, plus it's long lasting! Which is always a bonus.

Chloe is deep, comforting and warm and it wraps you up in a tuberose blanket. I find that the base notes of ambery, tuberose deliciousness are more like the top notes with a hint of peach on top but it starts out with a burst of powdery white flowers and aldehydes.

I don't wear it a lot but when I do, I always, always enjoy it especially in the winter

who.am.i.you

There is something so warm and cozy about this fragrance. I feel like it can be worn any time of the year. In summer, it's not too overwhelming to me, especially with only a spritz. It's peachy and comforting. In summer, it makes me think of the warm summer days surrounding me, but in fall/winter, it reminds me of being on a heated porch, wrapped in flannels and blankets, watching the cold wind whirl all around outside of the bubble of the porch -- thankful that this warm embrace exists. Despite being a comforting fragrance, I find this to be very classy. The white floral aspect makes it clean feeling. I guess it's a pretty well-rounded fragrance and its age is a testament to its uniqueness. :)

Review of original mid seventies Chloe edt, Parfums Lagerfeld.

Vintage original Chloe opens as an innocent white floral bouquet only to evolve in a darker way.
Aldehydes, narcissus, honeysuckle, tuberose, slightly peachy, powdery, green...
It is a testament to the green florals, with emphasis on florals, of the 70's. Reminiscent of Anaïs Anaïs like many have mentioned, Chloe is decidedly more rich, buttery and narcotic. Tuberose, which is the main player just can't hide, and even though there's a canopy of white flowers, the coconut lends an even more butter rich texture to the already heavy tuberose. The peach doesn't smell like peach; it feels like peach fuzz on alabaster skin.
Puberty, hormones raging, sexual desires awakening. Chloe captures the moment of transition from girl to woman in the most innocent way, but at the same time it makes a woman feel more desirable thanks to its raging beauty.
Despite its apparent innocence, a tender floral, the wildness of its rich flowers appealed to all women alike. Like tuberose, which starts pristine and virginal, and as the night approaches it becomes a vixen, deadly, narcotic.

It is a lush rich floral, which allows you to see what you are ready to see. It captures the image I have of the 70's, and along the way, it seems to show a tender sexual awakening. No wonder it was embraced by many filling the air with its scent.
I never experienced Chloe before, but as a lover of tuberose, I found an incredibly well executed rendition, that is rich, elegant, full of force and ready to take over. The emancipation of a flower.
As always, no gender label for me. I wear it, I let it take over, and I dream of a time when everything felt possible. Ideal in spring/summer, where the heat makes it come completely alive on skin.
Heavy sillage and very good longevity.

Side note: from what I've found, the very original release came in pure parfum, the gorgeous bottle with its Cala Lilly stopper, a silver travel atomizer of Parfum, edt splash in clear bottle, edt spray in frosted glass bottle and accompanying body care. Many mention an edp which I believe was released somewhere in the 80's to rival with the powerhouses of the decade. By then it was already Parfums Chloe so I suspect there was already a tweak in the formula.

I have to Admit at first I did not like this fragrance it was too old fashioned for me, something I would give to my grandma, but as the notes started to develop, I cannot get enough of it!! It´s sooo warm, sexy and sweet makes me feel like a women, its a mature fragrance I´ve had people complimented me on this one incredibly,is just so delicious and romantic. I could easily turn this one into my signature scent but unfortunately I´m a perfume whore I can´t stick to one fragrance I need them all for different purposes, but definetly willrepurchase! Thank you Chloe for making this piece of pure art!

I never really appreciated this beauty when I had it at the end of the 80s, I rarely wore it and I've been ignoring it ever since;I'd dismissed it as an old fashioned heavy floral. I have the little round glass bottle parfum version with the glass lily stopper in its ever so slightly worn-looking box, the 9.5ml Parfum in a silver canister which comes with a funnel & soft cloth holder in a stiff box, a splash and a spray version - a lot of juice for something I rarely wore!! I re-tried the pure parfum first & the first sniff on the stopper didn't smell too promising; maybe a bit sharp and nothing like I remembered but I persevered anyway and oh! what a treat! On my skin the coconut smells almost vanilla-like, it is rich and amazing, it stays pretty much the same after the opening notes have faded after a few minutes. There is nothing sharp here, just smoothness and warmth. I wore it to work and was virtually wrestled to the ground by a work colleague who couldn't stop sniffing me and my 16 year old son adores it. On a personal note, it takes me back to being a teenager, full of hope for the future & it reminds me of a friend who used to love it who is no longer here and mostly it makes me feel happy, calm and at peace - the power of perfume. I'm going to wear it more often now, the edt versions work really well in warmer weather.I'll check out the newer version as well but I'd recommend trying the Karl Lagerfeld original, it is truly beautiful, even for a non floral lover like me.

This, along with Rive Gauche and Cabochard, were probably my first perfume “true loves”. Late 80’s, early 90’s, I had all three of these beauties in my perfume stable, but Chloe was my go-to scent. I loved it, so it was very disappointing when they reformulated this. It appears that the old version is back though, or as close to it as I remember it, so I purchased a bottle of the new EDT for old time’s sake. It’s lighter and not as rich as I remember – the vintage version seemed so lush and sumptuous when you sprayed it on. It would settle around in you a beautiful, warm cloud and the staying power was incredible. That said, this most recent reincarnation is certainly better than the first reformulation I tried, which was nothing like the original. Why, oh why, do perfumers do this? It was a classic, dammit – a classic! Still, this is lovely. Dali for Women, by Salvador Dali, reminds me of the original Chloe, but the Dali is spicier, while the Chloe is sweeter. It’s still gorgeous, but I’m going to keep my eyes peeled for the vintage stuff. Sillage, while it lasted, was good, but unfortunately it had pretty much disappeared after four hours, and that was with two sprays.

Nikkafragrance

Second review: The more I wear my sample, the more it grows on me. It's warm and such a magical scent, they don't do it anymore like that nowadays. I think it's the perfect scent for fall, when it's windy, yet with some sunshine behind the clouds and you can feel the warm hug of that lovely scent. Used in reasonable amounts, it could be sexy, too. However I expected longevity over 24 hours. The drydown is the best part - it's sweet and musky, I can definitely feel the benzoin, gorgeous coconut and amber. It's smells so expensive for that price tag.

PinkRainbow

A sweet and feminine classic. Something very comforting and nostalgic about this scent. Pretty and proud.

Nikkafragrance

Starts with a strong accord of aldehydes, tuberose and peach, but one should definitely wait for the drydown - it's a very warm and delicious coconut. A agree that the tuberose note is one of the most extreme I've ever smelled and combined with aldehydes makes the perfume smells like a luxurious soap in the beginning. Definitely not a safe blind buy, a true vintage lover would appreciate it.

Southern Blonde

Original vintage Chloe, which has not been touched by any reformulation, is a fantastic Oriental floral with a lot going on. It smells great on me, my skin and body chemistry loves it. There are other fragrances that seem to come to mind briefly although this scent is unique. I smell a little bit of Oscar De La Renta and Yves Saint Laurent Paris, but less powdery and smokier, darker, and sexier. This starts off with a sweet peach and orange and honeysuckle scent. It's not too fruity but just enough for me. The flowers are not many but they are fragrant and make a statement. There's Queen Jasmine, in all her glory, a real Indian jasmine, with unapologetic aroma that hits your nose. Smells like a beautiful Hindu priestess. There's also carnation flowers and roses. The darker scents of sandalwood, woods, musk and incense are also here, giving this body a full body and a complexity. Beautiful. I can't believe I had never checked out this perfume. It smells like a million bucks but it's a cheapie, so get it while it's still selling and I hope to God it is never discontinued. I love to wear these type of strong florals for when I perform in evening gowns. This is just so gorgeous!!

MiituLoves

After a hectic/stressful day you come home and start a nice warm relaxing bath, sip some wine to unwind and let go of your days worries. Dry yourself off, jump into your cotton pajamas, spray on some Chole and slip into bed and let your dreams carry you away. This scent surrounds you in comfort. The sillage and longevity on the skin are moderate. It stays on clothing very nicely.

Chloe! So how've you've been? It's been a long time.

Let me tell you what Chloe did for me. I refer to the vintage 1975 Chloe. That was the fragrance I was familiar with when it was still selling before the reformulation. I went to every job interview as an 18 year old fresh out of high school girl wearing this perfume. At the time I thought it was the most divine, "grown up" and classy fragrance of my life. I clung to this perfume like my life depended on it. My boyfriend at the time was Manny a boorish but loveable Brooklyn bad boy car mechanic slash high school football player, who absolutely hated this perfume that he compared to "old women's soap". Lucky for me I was too busy to even think about what he meant by such nonsense. I got the jobs I wanted wearing this perfume. It always did the trick. So did Classique by Gaultier which Manny really liked but which I wore for "comfort" and not for "social climbing". Chloe was the perfume I strongly believed opened doors for me as a young woman in Manhattan NYC. Chloe was like a magic invisible woman who was always with me helping me out. She was my perfume fairy god mother. She always received compliments. Older women looked at me like like I was one of them. At the time I wanted the respect of my elders including my professors. Older men always checked me out when I wore this perfume with my outfits. Mothers who were going out with their kids always looked at me like I was taking on too much too soon. This frag was my first true entry into adulthood.

Chloe is a classic floral chypre. It opens with perfumy aldehydes. Now if you have no problem with aldehydes in fragrances this should be easy for you to wear. If not, look elsewhere for perfumes that do not contain aldehydes. This is an aldehydic scent as it opens. It's the aldehydes we have come to enjoy in classic vintage masterpieces like Chanel No. 5, Arpege by Lanvin, Chanel No. 22, White Shoulders by Evyan and First by Van Cleef and Arpels. The sparkling refreshing aldehydes are what makes this frag ultra feminine, for women only. Emphasis on women, not 15 year olds. The fragrance then turns into a fruit concentrated scent of peaches and coconut. The coconut is rather heavy and becomes milky sweet and tropical. It has a touch of the exotic with a tropical paradise type of vibe. Then it gets into it's floral heart. I smelled rose, carnation, jasmine, tuberose and lilac. The honeysuckle is also rather heavy to the point it's a floral honeysuckle and fruit type of frag. It's sweet but not cloying. Out of the depths of the base notes there's something that sort of turns into a honey. It's also like caramel. It becomes an unusual early gourmand fragrance before the gourmands ever arrived in the perfume universe and surprisingly without containing gourmand notes. The caramelized amber is at work. It's a dark and delicious amber perfume. The base is also rather woodsy and that sandalwood makes this frag into a chypre. There's oak moss and sandalwood which for me always make frags winners. The only thing missing was musk, but without musk the whole thing is more feminine. It's floral, fruited and woodsy. It has a long life and she's with you the whole day so you better like Chloe because she accompanies you to the doctor's appointment, to lunch with friends, to children's soccer games, to PTA meetings, to dinner dates, to the movies, to trysts with lovers, to any place you take her to.

Chloe and I are still together.

I think bout the women who wore this in the 70's. I can see the same woman who wears Fidji by La Roche Aliage by Estee Lauder or Chanel No. 19 wearing this. This is just as much a chypre because of the woods but it's not as green. It's more floral. The amber is what really make this perfume magical to me. The flowers are to die for, the coconut is nice if you don't mind it, and the aldehydes are the icing on the cake. I think of successful, hard working feminist women wearing this perfume, 1970's women who put their careers first before any other element in their life. I thihk of Marlo Thomas in That Girl or Mary Tyler Moore. This is a gorgeous grown up perfume for the woman who believes in herself. Chloe believes in you too.

EvesFolly

I got my long-awaited sample of vintage Chloe today, only to discover it is much softer and more mannerly than I would have supposed. Within minutes it dried down to a mellow floral blend that reminded me of Lilac and peach blossom. I could still smell the hints of more complex florals, and the nice woody, mossy base, but only as the merest suggestion. I was expecting more drama and risk with the narcissus and tuberose. A very pleasant, enjoyable scent, just not the classic powerhouse I was hoping for. Perhaps I can wear it on days I'm feeling subtle and mannerly. There hasn't been one yet, but you never know...

A note: Don't get this confused with the new "Women's Chloe" in the pale pink, fluted bottle - it is NOT the same thing at all. Fragrantica has a whole different listing for it as "Chloe Eau de Parfum/Toillette." They don't smell anything alike, except that they're both faintly sweet smells. But then, so is antifreeze. Just saying. The formula listed here is long obsolete; it looks like there's a modern reformulation. Not sure of the quality.

Update: I realized belatedly I had the EdT version, which I've since learned are always nearly invisible on me. I need the strong stuff. An experience with the EdP has caused me to fall deeply, affectionately in love with this scent, and see its richness and addictive complexity. It's a classic for a reason!

XxRosexX

If you want to smell exactly like hotel bar soap, go for it. Not bad, but I like my soapy scents to have at least a little warmth. None to be found here, just squeeky, squeeky, cleanliness is next to godliness, bar soap.

jana.hullinghorst

I had the opportunity of re introduction by a client of mine who was wearing this scent. She told me this is the only scent she has ever worn as she has problems with finding perfumes that don't give her a headache. (btw, she loves that she can now buy this at a drugstore at a great price! apparently this one used to cost a lot more when it was first introduced) It is absolutely stunning on this woman. A soapy floral with a powdery edge. Terrific projection, very soothing and definitely "old school". Not for those who like sweet scents, you will find zero sweetness in this. Just a beautiful combination of aldehydes and flowers. A great scent for those who want long lasting, classical fragrance on a budget.

Vintage Chloe edt by Lagerfeld

I had this dream that I was trying to walk through this thick haze of aldehydes, orris root and aquanet, its stench was so overwhelming, I fainted to the ground.

As the haze of one of the roughest starts in perfumary began to dissapate, I come to my senses and see Karl Lagerfeld holding a giant tuberose stalk of flowers that smelled so thick, heady, buttery, oily , real-almost off putting but not-and he began to beat me into submission to worship at the alter of the man behind the fan. Tuberose, tuberose and more tuberose.

Little while later supermodels descended and sprinkled jasmine, peaches, hyacinths , carnations and honeysuckle all over me. I passed out again at the heady floral that reminded me of its rival at the time Anais Anais...

But Lagerfelds white floral was bigger, stronger, louder with brass. It was going to be beautifully noticed.

I finally woke up in a field of mossy , soft musk with honeysuckle still lilting in and out wondering what happened to me... I had met Chloe.

Ruffienne

This review is for the Chloe currently available in 2016.

This fragrance is extremely old fashioned, and absolutely out of step with contemporary perfumery.
Which is not necessarily an entirely bad thing... ;-)

Probably the single most noticeable aspect of this powerful perfume is it's complexity. Compared to the sweet simplicity of mainstream perfume of the past few years, this is a wonderland of blending and harmonising, with many, many ingredients coaxed to show their best selves and meld into a vast, glorious symphony.

Whether you like it or not remains purely subjective, but wearing this is a complex, long lived, experience that you definitely share with those around you.

Despite having worn this (with a heavy hand, too, I suspect) as a teenager myself, I don't think this is an easy perfume for a younger woman to wear. It has a lot of presence, and a significant degree of sophistication about it.

I also am not too disturbed about the reformulation aspect of this perfume. I have a large bottle of the vintage and yes, it is different from that which you can buy now. But the modern interpretation is faithful to the original in spirit, and has simply tweaked some of the aspects of the perfume that are less acceptable to the modern nose. It's quite cleverly done, and the modern version still smells very recognisably like the old Chloe.

(And I would never wear either of them for anything other than for a walk down memory lane...)

olivianne

A couple years ago I received this as a gift from a friend. My immediate thoughts were that this was too "old". As others note, its' aldehydic opening that resembles Chanels' No. 5 was quite off-putting.

Well I just pulled this fragrance back out as I'm trying to clean out my apartment and found that I don't completely despise it, as I used to. It continues to reside outside of my favorites and regular rotations, but it's also not the most disliked in my collection. Well, any longer.

It's a tad heavy, and very much reminds me of perfumes I associate with my elders. However it's kind of warm, powdery and comforting (if not overdone!).

It's a fragrance I'll use sporadically, perhaps when I feel like using something dissimilar to the rest of my collection, or have the desire to step a little out of character, but overall this is not quite to my liking.

Scent: 4/10

arefuthescroob

Lovely decent scent for everyday wear, nothing too fancy.

ramskates

Lots of negative reviews of this one, but gosh, I have a different experience. I hadn't smelled it in many years but took a chance and bought a bottle at Marshall's yesterday. I got in the car and opened it and spritzed my wrist. Oh. My. Heavens. It was like I'd found my long lost soul mate. Not sure what that says for my skin or nose, since so many seem to find this one unpleasant, but just one spritz on my wrist put me in fragrance heaven. It is very similar to the Chloe Narcisse I've had but less intense. I really hate it for those who don't smell it like I do. But that happens both ways. By the way, this package and bottle I got were exactly as pictured and as much as I can recall the scent is very much like the "original," at least to my nose.

Ferminadaza

I'd always expected this to smell differently. I think it's the dark amber tone of the juice. You expect lethally Pungent with an outdated ripe civet and black currant leaf urine smell.

It's a bit of a cult classic and can be had for a song so I decided to give it a try. I realize that it has been reformulated and in some instances, I'll go hunting for the vintage version but in this case, it just makes more sense to go for what's there.

I am pleasantly surprised. This is a light garden of white florals centered around the sweetly feminine stridency of tuberose. I've smelled this before during my childhood in the late 70s/early 80s but did not realize that I was smelling Chloe. The wood basenotes don't get in the way of the womanly florals and the soapy aldehydes prevent the scent from being cloying.

I will be wearing this in spring summer for a nice switch up from my usual florientals and chypres.

ETA: Maybe I'm a bit strange but all of these reviews calling this "grandma" and outdated. I think it smells sexy and very feminine. There is a reason why tuberose plants were considered taboo during the Victorian age----the scent was supposed to enhance the libido making men incapable of containing themselves. As such, young girls were not permitted to have them in their rooms or while accepting gentlemen callers. Hilarious! Tuberose in the days of old was considered so overtly sensual, that in historical diaries and literature it was at times referred to as the flower of whores. Tuberose and Jasmine were scandalous back in the day.

ETA: Came back to this review in a bit of a confused state. I am wearing this today in warm early Spring weather. I am confused because I don't understand how this perfume is not more popular. Actually, I suppose that I do. So much of perfume is subjective and dependent upon the marketing of the perfumer. People hear 1970s and automatically people are going to think musty and fusty. In reality, this is really awesome.

It's a honeysuckle, peach, tuberose aldehydic perfume with a definite layer of sweet crystallized sugar. Sugar cubes. It's white flowers on a bed of sugar cubes. Again, it's not cloying despite the sugary element, the aldehydes give it a triple milled soap quality--very clean and bright. I'm really falling in love and can say that I would likely include this in my personal fifteen absolutely necessary scents. It has all of the elements that are supposed to be popular today: sugar, check! White floral, check! Clean scent, check! Too weird that more people are not in love. Again...marketing seems to be everything.

Rochellesc

Tried as part of a Sephora sample box a coworker generously passed on to me - I'd previously sprayed my wrist at a department store and pretty much promptly forgot about it but this time, I sprayed the tiny spritzer on my chest/neck and WOW, what a difference! At first it was a very warm, weird, heavy cloud that I figured would dissipate as the day wore on but it morphed into a spicy pleasantness that kept making me wonder WHO I was smelling because it was SO different! And even now, almost 24 hours later, I can still catch it when I wave my pajama top around! This is one of those powerhouse scents for a woman who wants to smell as strong and unique as she is, which is to say, it's not for everybody. If you're tired of the sugary vanillas of the last few years and aren't into "trendy", definitely give Chloe a shot - you may just find your new classic!

nordhaul

I had this during mY trial and error years
as a pre-teen - teen, and although I was
not ever thinking this to be TOO abject a
Perfume, compared to all of the other
choices out here in the world this is an F.

Pretty boring, yet also manages to be
harsh and crude. How do ya do it? It
must be the sign of the times back then.
NOT for me, not for any body. ...Peace...

Amélie Amélie

A big "NO"!
I really love every single ingredient listed in Chloe's olfactive pyramid especially tuberose which is supposed to be the main theme of this fragrance. What a let down.

To me,this Chloe It is nondescript, dull and fusty. It reminds me of an old cheap Avon "perfume" .

Considering it's composition, Chloe should be fresh, spicy, exciting and sassy. It is not. It reminds me of overripe peaches on the verge of going bad.
How can a perfumer make tuberose smell boring and stuffy is beyond me but this seems to have achieved this feat.

In my opinion, this is one of the most overrated fragrances of the 70's.

Nicole5678

My mom used to wear Chloe parfum when she got dressed up for special occasions years ago, so I associate it with those days. She's not really a perfume person, so this is the only one I really associate with her--her and her favorite "fancy" purple dress. I just swapped for a bottle so I could remember the smell and how much I admired her. I'm not sure if I'd ever wear it myself--it may be too sweet or too floral for me--but I'm pleased to have it in my collection. It's comforting to sniff the bottle and feel like a little girl again.

Zetamamman

First Chloe perfume I tried, as a child, my mother's bottle. It smelled as bad on me then as all Chloe scents still do- just unpleasant sharpness.
I used to think of it as perfume gone bad, but it seems like it's just my chemistry. White florals are not my friends.

The_Entity

The best Chloe have ever made, this always works with my chemistry, suitable for day or night, I really dont like the stuff Chloe are making now, like the new Chloe perfume or See, very bland with no character, shame this is discontinued

Aredore

Some departent stores are actively putting the classic Chloe out for test, and it's easy to see why. The scent is retro-fabulous! Its a warm, yellow floral (tuberose, I'm told,) that is pillowly soft, with a little bit of sweetness and touch of spice. With drier, more floral fragrances cycling back into vogue (my fellow Millienals have become adults!) the classic Chloe is the perfect "sorry-not-sorry" scent for the young woman who has made her peace with inevitably becomming her mother.

And why not? Mom is awesome.

Scout

Oh Chloe!!! I was about 7 or 8 years old when my Mom first purchased this in the late '70s. I can remember sitting in the bathroom watching her put on her makeup and teasing her hair, cigarette leaving a trace of nicotine on the edge of the sink, and her fussing that she forgot she left it there. Chloe cut through all of it: the hairspray, the cigarette smoke, the tobacco, the face powder. It was sweet and thick and bold. Mom wore IT. It did not wear HER. I was delighted when she bought it; I did not like the dark side of Emeraude and the other metallic powder dark scents she had worn through the years. This was bright and unique. She later went back to the powder dark side, and I don't think they suit her as well. I've tried Chloe several times and it's generally better for me in the summer when I'm a bit more sweaty and oily. But nothing as good as how it smelled on my Mom....

calma

In 1975 when Lagerfeldt launched the first perfume under his name, poor Chloé had more than her fair share of critics. The perfume was dismissed as being too heavy, too cloying, too sweet and too old-fashioned. Even the design of the bottle, with its soft curves and lily-shaped stopper, was criticised.
Soon, however, its utter originality and unequivocal ambience began to reveal itself and ultimately became an enormous success.

Chloé is, or was, a perfume aimed directly at the heart.
A perfume of love - intimate, unhibited and passionate.
If it is perceived as 'heavy', it´s simply because it is absolutely committed to the exploitation of one dominant flower -
the pervasively lovely tuberose. It clings, it envelops, it persists and permeates, but it does all this with a rare beauty.
Its scent is beautifully rich and creamy, almost euphoric, and when handled by a perfumer of great skill it can be the ideal catalyst, the point of departure.
That´s certainly the case here.

Few perfumes can rival the graceful femininity
of this amber-coloured one.
The dreamlike blend of tuberose, jasmine, spring roses, honeysucke and orangeblossom together with a distinct peach note are seamlessly woven together with a discreet backdrop of oakmoss, musk, amber and a light facet of patchouli.
The total effect is nothing short of hypnotic!

A wonderful, truly great floral composition that is beautiful, mesmerising and soft as silk at all stages of its development.
For such an icon of a perfume, I hope for a deserved comeback of this great classic.
I have a few bottles carefully stored away from light and heat and used on special occasions.

This 1975 Chloé is in my opinion the true Chloé, and has absolutely no relation to the new perfume with the same name.

SmellyBliss

Upon taking a whiff of this perfume, the only word that came to mind was, "No." I could not get rid of it quickly enough.

It was an incredibly jarring olfactory experience.

Frayja

Μy best friend wore it on her 20's,around 199-something,at 9 o'clock in the morning,in the class, when all our senses were too sleepy and on dysfunction, but she smelled DIVINE!
After many years,I smelled it on an old, really old lady and it was so tender, feminine and beautiful-divine too! So,if you are the right person with the right skin,no matter if you are in your 20's or your 80's (like all the perfumes behave,I think) ,this perfume react wonderful,no out loud,no old-ladyish,no wrong at all.
Just check out that you are the one!

tittertat

I don't usually like floral perfumes but if I'm going to wear one I always pick this one. Chloe has an old fashioned quality and I picture a girl in flowing a white silky dress in a meadow. My favorite out of the Chloe line.

MadMadamMimm

I was named after this perfume, so I guess it's fitting that I became a tuberose lover! Truth be told, I don't get any tuberose in this- I get much more aldehyde, orris root, rose, lilac, honeysuckle and musk. But perhaps someday I will get to smell a 70s vintage to compare.

ETA: I've been trying to figure out what this reminds me of, and I have it. Chloé smells clean and luxurious like the richest bath products at the fanciest bed and breakfast. The kind where you would book another night just to steal the soaps off the cart in the hallway, and hoard them for years.

Wish I still had some of the original around. What they bottle today under this name is nothing Ike it used to be. The original for me, was college in the 80's and the rest of that decade. Wouldn't mind taking the olfactory train down memory lane if I could find a bottle of the original, but don't miss wearing it. The original was great for her time.

Good bye Chloe....today I used the last drop of my vintage flanker. I wore this perfume for 25 years and it is time to move on. I used to enjoy the heavy, syrupy sweet, almost gooey floral concoction. It is a reminder of Guess jeans, penny loafers, big shirts with shoulder pads and perms (and rooster bangs). I decided a few months after I turned 40 it was time to not necessarily reinvent myself but more like refresh myself and accept that I am officially a woman and not a girl. This fragrance just does not fit my image of myself anymore. There are plenty of old school 80/90's perfumes I still enjoy but my definition of feminity is more along the lines of the lovely French women with pencil skirts and silk blouses...they are timeless...I doubt French women in the 80's used Sun-In and electric blue eyeliner with pink hair mascara pulled through their bangs. I think they have always been the same and that is who I have become. Not trendy or faddish....just timeless..undated. So, on this rainy day in May...I have decided that Chloe will no longer hold a place in my perfume wardrobe. No repurchase just a fond farewell.

Sevparfumaddict

souvenir of the 80's. I still have a bottle and when I can't sleep, I spray it on my pillow. I fell like a child when I smell it.

lotus and jasmine

Review of vintage edp:

Let me begin by stating that I dislike coconut. On my skin, Chloe opens with a strong wood/rose accord, very dense, and very dry. Within about 15 minutes, the coconut appears This is not an oily coconut, or a suntan lotion coconut, but a toasted, caramelized samoa cookie type coconut- it's actually really wonderful. Combined with the rose and wood, the combination is lazy, warm, and rich. This phase is delicious, almost gourmand to my nose, subtle, comforting, and I find it impossible to stop huffing my wrist!

In the dry down I get lightly sweet honey suckle, a touch of spice from the ylang ylang, orange blossom, and a strong, spicy cedar base. Faint jasmine (in the peachy headspace this note can develop) wafts in and out, by far the most subtle use of this note that I've encountered. I LOVE THIS SCENT! Chloe is truly amazing, and I already feel a need for a back up bottle. This is a scent to be savored, almost indescribable. It is beautifully balanced, and on my skin, remains dry and spicy start to finish. This is what I was expecting from Dune, a rich, spicy, oriental vibe with enveloping heat, like the warmth of sun radiating from a rock face.

I notice that others review this very differently- vintage scents (mine is from the 80s) can age differently, or this may be a function of my skin chemistry, but for me Chloe Chloe is the perfect laid back floriental. I guess I'll have to buy that back up bottle, to be sure!

I highly recommend trying this scent! However, as so many others report different experiences, it may be best to try before buying! Either way, this is one to experience. I honestly thought I would hate it, but this is a scent that I LOVE! I would be perfectly happy to smell like this for the rest of my life.

EDIT: I just tried the reformulation. It is a white musk bomb! The notes of the original may be there, but all are overwhelmed by soap.

Walking Unicorn

Vintage Lagerfield Pure Parfum:
It starts with a short burst of honeysuckle and orange blossom that flies up your nose, but within seconds there is warmth, spices and a boozy peach that encapsulates you as all sorts of glorious florals come through including tuberose, hyacinth, ylang-ylang, jasmine, narcissus, and lily of the valley. I also noticed a slight woody scent with amber, and oakmoss. It's hard for me to describe this fragrance any further other than that when I smell this it makes me happy.

This Chloe may be dated because its so different from the modern florals but this bold, intoxicating feminine scent is elegant and beautiful. Lots of love for vintage Chloe.

mirrorghost

this starts off all white florals and tuberose. it's kind of powdery and definitely smells 70s/80s to me. i guess this is tuberose, but i feel it's such a melange of florals that it doesn't come off as straight off tuberose really. personally i detect more peach and orange blossom in this, at least at the beginning. after awhile i sense more tuberose, but i think the hyacinth and lilacs are making it seem more powdery and spring-like. i am glad i finally got to try this after all these years, but it's not really for me. i do realize that i recognize and have smelled it on people in the past, which is always interesting.

Lisa-Lashez69

Ok, so while I have a love for all perfumes, whether they be vintage, niche, cheap, supermarket, celebrity or whatever, as I have an eclectic nose, haha, Chloe by Chloe has got to the one and only scent I absoultely do not love... Just overall a terrible scent. Maybe its because I have the new formula pictured above, but I dont seem to get it. Maybe its because I havent given it the chance it deserves? I dont know.... I am actually quite upset that I am not getting the beautiful fragranced loveliness that is being told over and over again. Thats probably down to the formula. The only good thing for me? It has incredible sillage and longevity-- but that only makes it worse if you dont like it! The bottle is just as yawningly boring too lol. Such a damn shame really!
My aim now? Is to get hold of the old version and maybe my mind and nose will be swayed into loving this much loved classic! ☺️

esteban747

Oh, wow. this is like a orchestra of flowers and notes that keep growing by the minute!
It's hard to really catch a note because immediately another one appears.
But, yes. It's feminine, in a delicate way. Like early spring flowers, sort of innocent too.
It has a sweetness that is tamed, never gets out of control. I'm surprised because the opening can be quite strong, but soon this symphony of flowers turns quiet and stays that way.
Beautiful.

Review for Chloe Lagerfeld (older version)

Dear God how I miss these older vintage silage bombs! This is the stuff I grew up with as a kid. If you saw this on your Mom or Grandma's vanity and sprayed it, a few washings with Dawn soap could not hide the fact you were snooping through their vanity fragrances and there was no covering it up or washing it off.

Chloe is a very elegant but dated fragrance. Personally it's way to loud for my liking. It's very heavy and strong. This was how perfume used to be made. You would pay a decent price for it at the Dept store however you were never let down. This along with a handful of other 80's scents such as Estee, Cinnabar, Youth Dew were all made to last. It's sad for me to smell fragrances now that are a mere shadow of the power houses we had in the day. Chloe is a true FLOWERBOMB. This is what flowerbomb was meant to be. If your lucky enough to find the vintage version just a small dab will do you the less the better it's nice but only when worn gently. When I say gently it's like spray on a cotton ball and just dab it under clothing. It's that potent.

Bella1

Wow! You REALLY don't like Chloe'.

ifeomajoy

This is an amazing scent! It is so adorably sweet and feminine!! I was wondering if I was going to like it at all, as some of the reviews are poles apart but for me this was love at first sniff. I feel very elegant when I am wearing this, indeed Chloe Chloe exudes confidence, being chic and glamorous! To think that this is the Coty Prestige version, I can only imagine the depth of sweetness of the original version. Oh! And Yes, easy does it when it comes to spraying on, you don't want people asking"what are you wearing?" in a bad way. Lol!!

drugstore classics

I am fond of a good many old fashioned floral bombs, and to me this is the best of the lot. Comments about a hairspray aura in the opening are absolutely accurate. The first time I tried Chloe, my impression was hardly favorable. Overwhelmed, is more like.

But I've grown to love the pungent opening, aware that beyond it is awaiting me the perfect blend of honeysuckle-sweetness. A quiet layer of romantic musk blends all the florals seamlessly together. Tuberose does not run the show, but simpers quietly in the background, behind her gorgeous floral cousins! If you wish to smell unbelievably feminine, I can think of no better choice than Chloe. Beguilement waits behind the hairspray. ;)

All this said, Chloe is also perfectly office appropriate, provided you spray lightly and/or wear under clothing. There's an almost soapy note when worn in a restrained manner, which could easily be your body wash or bath salts lingering softly... Whether to wear as a siren song or a polite, ladylike manner is up to you, but I find Chloe to be a winner in every way imaginable.

Note - Oddly enough, this lovely and distinctive floral layers perfectly on my skin with - OH MY - Tabu??? But so it does! <3

Whit

I can't believe I've never tried Chloe before. I've smelled the new version (Chloe EDP), which of course doesn't resemble this (the Lagerfeld) one at all.

I suppose knowing that it had a strong dose of tuberose is what put me off of trying it. I like tuberose, but too much can be headache inducing for me. I was pleasantly surprised by this though. Very lovely, old school tuberose scent! I found it to be a little overwhelming in the opening, but as it settles, it warms up nicely. This is one that you have to go sparingly with as it's heavy and will knock you out if over applied. The dry down is lovely; it get a certain spiciness/sweetness and added warmth on my skin, kinda like a cuddly blanket. Sillage was big and longevity was superb on my skin. If you're craving a blast from the past, go get a bottle, or if you're a tuberose lover, do give it a whirl.

Sniezel

While I love vintage perfumes, I absolutely hate this one. It smells outdated, like a grandma that has been soaking in a tuberose-bath for a week. I blind-bought it over 6 months ago because I thought it might somewhat resemble the modern Chloé. Boy was I wrong!

tittertat

Love- hate this one. Sometimes it reminds me of the type of pre- Raphaelite ladies in the paintings with long ringlets and gauzy dresses in flowerey meadows. But sometimes it reminds me of my great granny. Flowery, powdery very prim and lady like all around. But I'm not perfectly ladylike every single day:)

pixiewinks

Chloe is lovely. Dated? I think not...Classic...classy...light yet rich, complex, intoxicating, delicate, addictive. The woman who wears this is confident, feminine, intelligent, romantic.
I love it.

This Fragrance born in '75 it was already dated in '76.
Okay.. but not over '81!
If you like to feel yourself inside of Farrah Fawcett's hair: this is your fragrance.
I mean this is a delightful fragrance but with that hairspray feeling that is hard to wear nowadays. Except if you want to stay home reading a book of Erica Jong, be extremely accurate on a 70s dress code party, or have a vacancy in Love Boat.

Round 2 for me wearing Chloe and what a welcomed gift this has been! Romance in a bottle, soft and very subtle not loud but makes a statement. I know that there have been many others after Chloe but this one is one of my first loves and my husband remembered my saying so... Top notes of peach and orange pop out and don't disappear into the night, musk magic arrives at just the right time and stays close to the skin with warm amber. A sweet anniversary surpise that will be worn and treasured throughout the year and many more years to follow! I have been without this floral beauty far too long. Everything is better the second time around especially perfume. Moment to moment sexy at it's best! Enjoy the compliments coming ladies!

sparkatude

Chloe... You make me gag if I breathe too quickly after first spraying you, but, Oh how I am glad I am patient with you. You dry down to a beautiful field of floral loveliness, but you are so warm and cozy (must be the amber, musk and woody notes). I sense a tiny, little spice (is that pepper?) it is hidden behind the flowers, but it's just enough to give you some personality. The silage is moderate on me and she lasts 4 hours or so. I have a feeling I will be enjoying this perfume through the winter.

woodlandwalk

I wore this back in the 80s and have a distant memory of it being feminine, pretty, rich without being heavy - a little lady-like but not old fashioned. I haven't worn it since then though.

Just the other evening though, I was at an art preview and this person who I normally find really irritating was chatting to me and I noticed she was wearing a lovely and vaguely familiar perfume. It smelled classic (possibly Hermes I wondered?) yet fresh, full and...interesting! So of course I asked what she was wearing, and it was Chloe.

I stuck around longer than usual to chat (I know this makes me sound like an uppity cow, but you've never met this person) because she smelled nice!

We got into a conversation about perfume, as you do, and she revealed that she has quite a collection, including a vintage bottle of Chanel No. 5 in parfum.

Well, there you go - she knows a thing or three about perfume - and she's a good artist to boot.

So the moral of the tale is; some things in life make up for being a bit irritating.

The scent impression was slightly peppery, rich but not heavy or cloying, white floral, elegant and even slightly dewy. I might seek this out again...

I think Chloe is maybe an unsung classic!

Michylaka

I love Chloe as it is the first perfume I was ever given by my brother at the young age of thirteen. It brings back memories of my first sweetheart that I was with from thirteen to seventeen. It evokes feelings of innocence and youth for me. It is a beautiful floral strong of tuberose but it also has honeysuckle which is possibly my favorite flower. It is a complex fragrance that I still love to wear when feeling floral. It is a bit strong of aldehydes and its lasting power is awesome. It is easily recognizable and ultra feminine. 10/10

Fragaria

I hated this scent for like a million years. Not really "wearing" it to give it a chance. I got it cheap and figured I'd be brave. First spray was frightening. As time passed, rather quickly, I got a scent I've admired on others for......a million years! So, I wore it again! I love it! One spray is enough, and even walking through just the mist if your leaving the house too soon. It's lovely. I use one spray a couple hours before going out for the day, and it lasts the day. This will be in my collection forever...literally. One bottle will last about that long!

MRowe

Got this one in a blind buy from eBay when it came as a package deal with the sister fragrance Chloe Narcisse. While I certainly like the Narcisse better this one has a charm all its own and the cute bottle with the while calla lilly stopper brings back memories of an advert in the 80's with a woman applying the perfume with the stopper. Although advertised as very sexy it is almost more of an old classic, grandmotherly or matronly fragrance.

tessture

A heavy strong tuberose scent with an older style base. Sweet but pretty, though dated. Definitely a big white floral

LunaTaylor

I finally got to try this in a perfume store with mostly celebrity scents, I was surprised to find it. It is a bit heavier than I expected and though I can smell rose and honeysuckle I mostly get carnation which isn't my favorite flower. I don't immediately smell 'white flowers" I smell more yellow/pink flowers if that makes sense. I may be one of the few people who would prefer the new formula but I am guessing as I havent smelled it. I do like that it gets a bit powdery also. I like floral powdery smells as they remind me of Victorian ladies...I wish I could have smelled the other Chloe perfumes along side of this.

JPS1979

This one holds a special place in my heart. My maternal grandmother always smelled of this. I remember an orange blossom, lilac and pleasant musky ambery smell to it. From what I can remember, it would be a very dated frag now, but I'm sure some people still enjoy it.

krmarich

I have the original Parfums Lagerfeld version. This could be the inspiration for Giorgio or Poison. It blasts its tuberose note loudly and can easily fill a room with one spray.

Otherwise this is a very attractive fragrance. The sultry warm weather white florals and peach are delicious. This is the kind of tuberose perfume done wrong. Its bitter and drowns out all of the other notes.

IMO Lagerfeld offered better fragrance for men. Chloe wears you and not the other way around. Fortunately, after a few hours, the tuberose surrenders it strength and the other flowers get their turn. My nose is still in shock, however.

None the less, Chloe is a classic and compared to anything released after 2005. Its a dense white floral that shouldn't be missed!

BetsyMeszaros

This is for the 1975 version parfum in the elegant bottle with the top that looks like lilly petals. It is almost impossible to find outside of ebay and is nothing like what you find in drugstores and big box stores. It also is quite different then the modern version.

I love it because of the peach note with a touch of honeysuckle and a tad of tuberose. This is a well balanced elegant fragrance. It is a complex and sophisticated scent.

Hard to believe this was done by IFF and not one of the great French houses.

crunch513

It smells very mild and musty. Not something that I love, but nor do I hate it. Just neutral. Definitely office appropriate, but not inspiring.

natashamarie

Bought this online as a blind buy after reading lots of reviews and I figured I needed to try it out. I sprayed a bit on my wrist and to me it instantly smelled soapy. Almost like Dial Soap, the yellow-orangish soap bar. I let it sit on my skin awhile and then I took a whiff again, the soapy-ness was still there but it started to fade and I could definitely smell the Aldehydes in there. It became flowery as well.

This is something I would only wear on a special occasion, I don't think I could pull this off as an every day type fragrance. Maybe to a wedding, or going out to lunch/dinner. This is a lovely fragrance over-all. I rather enjoy it.

blacktaffeta

This review is for the vintage Lagerfeld EdT.

I seem to have reached a stage in my pefume exploration where I can appreciate a fragrance for what it is, without necessarily liking it.

And so it is with Chloe. This is a well balanced white floral (I don't much care for white florals in general) with a very pronounced tuberose note (I REALLY don't care for tuberose). However, the ingredients seem to be of high quality, the composition is nice, and erm - it's very good if you like that kind of thing.

I'm reminded of Anais Anais here, not that they are especially alike, but they were launched at around the same time (1975 and 1978) and they both bewildered me then. As a youg girl just getting interested in fragrance, I was the target market for both - but I just didn't like them, and couldn't work out why. Even then I was much more into Miss Dior and Arpege, and I was delighted when Opium came along.

Now I'm no longer bewildered, I simply realise they are good of their kind, but not to my taste. Marketing is a funny thing - even now I can't see Chloe as a fragrance for young girls.

truman

The 1975 version is extaordinary. Very rich and long lasting. The aldehydes play an important role in this well done composition.

Wilka

I miss this beautiful fragrance here, in Uruguay. I wonder why they don't realize it's exquisitely feminine and definitely a classic. I'd buy it immediately if I saw it here! I had it twice: first, the Karl Lagerfeld version and then, the Chloe's one. Love it!!!

Mooniq

Chloe is a mystic scent to me.. Some days its very fresh some other days its more like a twin to Calvin Klein Obsession on my skin, they share the spicy vibe's. Obsession is a scent that turns awful on my skin but Chloe is great.

My mother have this. It smells like a professional woman aged 30 and above. It was a really floral fragrance because, the rose and the tuberose make this a bouquet floral type of perfume. It was quite nice in a sense. Woody notes are also noticeable. Somehow, it resembles a tiny molecule of any oriental frag for me. Smells like a serious woman. Not that attractive. Can't notice the coconut note.

Didn't find anything about it too special. Did remind me a bit of bug spray for some reason. Not a bad smelling one mind you, but I swear I've smelled something like this before. Can't really narrow it down to which one though.

Manny44

Because Im a male I personally dont wear this but a girl I was just in an elevator with was and I loved it on her. It smelled wonderful, white flowers and rose, and asked her what it was so I could jump on here and see the note breakdown. Super-gorgeous.

pipergirl

I tested this at the store today and not a fan. Very strong on the initial spray to an unpleasant degree. I could tell that the shoppers around me did not like what they were smelling..so I went to the bathroom and washed it off of my hand.

This is one of those that might need time to settle and develop. Exercise caution when testing in the store.

skysky900

When first applied I really did not like this scent. It reminded me of a bathroom!

BUT, this perfume is a transformer! Give it a little time to melt into your skin and work with your chemistry and it becomes a very classic and mysterious little scent. On me, it stays close to my skin.

The aldehydes are apparent, which I think give it that unpleasant smell in the beginning. On the dry down though, the aldehydes go into the background, making room for the warm, comforting smells.

There is a powdery, white floral note that rounds out this otherwise kind of dirty perfume.

I would recommend sampling this on your skin first. Honestly though, its cheap enough on the internet (and apparently in TjMaxx type stores) that you should just buy a bottle of it. If you don't like it, give it to a friend! Everyone should experience a classic scent like this!

Mimielle

I liked and wore the old one but have not tested the new one. I sniffed the bottle and it smells good but seemed it was missing something warm and deep and the top was a little brassy. I should get a tester and give it a proper try so I can say something about them both but the warmth that the new seems to lack is one of the things I loved about the old version. I can't seem to like it in the new formulation and it lacks the nostalgia value too. Eh.

marine.altunyan

This smells like what I expect a French perfume to smell like. You can tell it's a classic right away. Not light but then that's what a classic French perfume was originally like. Makes you feel like a woman!

kati77

I smell a deep honey. Little bit warm honey. This is what i get on my skin when i am wearing it. Huge longevity.

supernal light

I had this but didn't like it at all so gave it away. A weird, ugly smell that doesn't seem comfortable with itself, really odd.

atroposofnothing

I just found the EDT at TJ Maxx at too good a price to pass up, since I've been wanting to try this for a while.
I don't find this scent overwhelming or cloying at all, but I did apply it very lightly. I was quite alarmed when I first applied it, because it smelled like everything wrong with the 80's, but that dissipated quickly and I found myself utterly charmed. It settled within a few minutes into a lovely soft honeysuckle, with a dry woody undertone which seem to save it from tipping over into cloying. About four hours on, it's deepening into jasmine with an earthier base, and I suspect that in another few hours it will have gone softer still, and low and dark and gorgeous. I still need to live with it for a few days, but so far, it's instant infatuation :)

darcy2

I wore this in the mid 1970's, one of my boyfriend's said it was so strong he could almost taste it. Not a good thing to hear at any time. It was rich, full sophisticated lady scent, and I was a teenager and couldn't pull it off. I recently got a current edition of this, wanted to see how it compared to the 1970's version. It is still a heady tuberose, white floral bombshell of a fragrance, and I can wear it, it doesn't wear me. It lacks some of the depth of the original Chloe, but I still like it very much - it still has decent projection and longevity, at least no one will complain of "tasting" it again....the days of perfume smelling that powerful are long gone. (Excepting Amarige,of course!)

stephm99

My mother has worn this for years. It smells better on her than on me, but it's feminine and soft. I don't generally like a lot of the "classic" perfumes--I hated Chanel No 5 for instance--but this one is very pleasant.

lisatenholt

I just got this from my mom. It's from the year it came out. I don't know if every container is like mine, but it's the 'old' container: with no spraycap, just the gap. At first smelling out of the bottle, it just smells like old lady's (in a not-pleasant way) to me, but onces applied this adapts to your body. I love this scent. It smells fruity, elegant, strong but at the same time so soft.

stuinstr

This is my favorite scent, and I wish it was still in production. I buy a bottle anytime I can to stock up.

lemmenkukka

I have worn this since 1980 when I was a young student in university. It was Autumn and the weather was cool but the wind was blowing softly from south. This fragrance was absolutely gorgeous for that moment. My becoming husband could not stop sniffing my neck and praising how divine I smell... This is very good for colder days, it brings warmth and soft comfort for those days.

SCBohemian

Chloe is an iconic floral that never goes out of style. A beautiful composition of jasmine, lilac, tuberose, and carnation. I started wearing Chloe in the early '90's and continue to include it in my fragrance repetoire. Chloe is such an uplifting, gorgeous scent :-)

sweetviolet

My sister wore this in the 80's. You have to remember when the so called old people wore it they were then young. What a lovely fragrance. If a perfume last long on the market it's a classic and classics never go out of style. As it is with classic clothes so it is with classic perfumes. Chloe will always be on the market as it is a very fresh and elegant scent.

winkibat

Oh, I had such high hopes for this. I've smelled it on others and it smelled beautiful. There is not one note listed that I don't like. But Chloe doesn't like me. It's too...something...Maybe too much aldehyde or tuberose, I'm not sure. A reviewer below called it "tangy" and yes, that's the right word. I so wanted the wonderful creamy floral that others have described, but all I can smell is hairspray and something very like old lipstick. Perhaps I should hunt down the original Lagerfeld version.

sweettoothannie

What my mother wore in my childhood. Amazing. I can still feel it through memories and imagination.

Tovah

My high school boyfriend's mother wore this, and it really suited her. She was a tall redhead with an aggressive, biting personality (think Lois Wilkerson from Malcolm in the Middle, only not that laid back...) Rather than notes or blends, for me fragrances are all about mood and connotation and memory. (I always say that without scent I would have no memories). So, obviously, my mind tends to compartmentalize smells in a sort of physical and emotional timeline. As a fragrance, I think Chloe is marvelous, beautiful, and elegant. It smells sophisticated and intimidating, and a bit mysterious. If my brain didn't insist on this fragrance belonging to a certain place/time/and person, I'd probably want to own it, like a stunning painting. As it is, even observing the bottle sends off inner warnings...do not go there. However, I can still "feel" this fragrance in my mind, and I'd recognize it anywhere.

Ceyris

A classic example of how a fragrance can be changed by body chemistry. My friend wears this scent and it is deliciously floral and spicy on her. On me, it is unpleasantly sharp and pungent.

tejal

Vintage beauty..love it..they should continue making perfumes like these.Smells like walk in a lovely white floral garden..away from city.. during a light windy night.

Chocobaby

This was one of my favorite scents when I was growing up. My mom had a big bottle and gave me a teeny miniature. I used to dab my wrists and behind my ears when we go out for dinner. I felt so grown up and fancy ( I was probably 8/9). I remember the scent being quite strong, but sweet in a floral way, maybe the orange blossom and honeysuckle. I used up my teeny miniature and eventually bought a large bottle but it smelled different, just floral, no sweetness. I was so disappointed. :(

kismetdaisy

My mom has worn this for as long as I can remember. I would even try to buy her new perfumes for Christmas(just for something new,) and they would sit on the shelf unused--She had a Chloe addiction!

Me, personally--I liked the smell on her, maybe it was just because I associated it with my mother, and that was always a happy thought.. but still, I found it to be too strong and bold for me to ever wear myself. But now, I have grown to love it on my own. I have created my own time for it, my own memories of it. I have disassociated it from my mother.

I wear this on fancy occasions or for nights out. I only use 2 spritz, as it is a very powerful scent. They definitely don't make perfumes like this anymore! I guess it is a classic--and the new Chloe? It's almost a joke compared to this. I can't really describe the way it smells though, even after smelling it my whole life. It's indescribable. But beautiful, none the less. I started really loving this at the age of 20. I am now 24, and some still might say that this is too much of an "old lady" fragrance, but they just can't wrap their heads around it--With all of today's sweet, fruity, watered- down frags-- It's no wonder this seems foreign to younger people!

pinktoe

I looooveee this frag!! One of my very favorite ones of all times. I remember my mother getting a bottle as a gift in the early 90s and me using it all. It reminds me of college and happy times. I hate it when girls who were mere ideas in their parents teen dreams trash classy classics like this beautiful scent. It's a mature white flowers round smell, its sweet but not sticky vanilla-cotton candy kinda sweet. It tells all those teen frags, hey grils, this is how you are sweet without being dessert.

BettyNoir

doormouse- I totally agree!

If it weren't for older people buying scent we would be flooded with fruity florals aimed at the teens and nothing else would be available! Thank God for older perfume wearers not following the herd!

As for Chloe- very tuberose and almost cloyingly floral, and way too much peach for me, but it is a classic and I hope it will stick around.

doormouse1

The age bias on this site is frankly shocking.

Classic beautiful perfumes are dismissed as 'stinky old lady scents' by mere children who only want to smell of sweets, fizzy drinks or what they hope their favourite pop singer smells of, merely because his/her name is on the bottle.

Never mind, one day you'll grow up and hopefully realise that the truly great perfumes of this world are the ones you currently dismiss as 'stinky old lady scents.'
